The bidders were probably 500 owners who want there cars back to how they looked when they left Tickford, rather than use the better made copies.
Checking the rear sticker is one sure way of telling if the car has ever had paint on the hatch. If its the original then the RS500 part is ever so slightly a different shade to the rest of the sticker.
The reason for this is they arrived at Tickfords stickered up as normal 3drs. Tickford then removed the RS part from the top row after the Sierra bit and added the 500 bit below which is the reason is ever so slightly different in colour.
If you had a mint 500 but the rear stickers been swapped in the past for a copy, then Ł150 is money well spent as it will make it look original again under inspection adding far more value to the car.
I imagine a few canny fellas were after it.

People in the vinyl trade can get the text, and have cut to correct size !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely ridiculous IMO.
But if people are so gulible that is there look out, items are worth what people pay for them, unfortunately idiots 'IMO' pay far too much, and set precidents that others just follow. But like you say thats the way of the world.

Happily retired
Totally agree cheap money for something thats not available & cant be replaced . I collect trade cards & pay good money for orginal rare 1950's cards that could be copied for pence, I can tell the difference as can any collector, same with these cars. If you want Top dollar for an RS500 then this is very cheap if your decal needs replacing. The next one that comes up will cost a lot more im sure as very few probably exist.

Two nice, similar 500s side by side, both being viewed by someone who knows their onions about these cars - Ł35k for the copied sticker car and say 36k for one with its original sticker still intact.
The one with the copy sticker on is immediately suspected of having paint, so then what else has been done to it you cannot spot straight away - immediately puts doubt in the mind of the buyer.
Everyones different, some would say sod it and save a grand, others think the original sticker car is the one to have and its only a grand more and less chance of having been messed with and easier to shift in the future.
Or others say 35/36k for a shonky sierra, they must need their head read and buy a nice 3dr for 10k instead.
We are all different, what floats your boat might not float mine, thats why these old buses in all conditions will sell and the price gap between a ropey 3dr and a minter 500 is huge, the market ultimately determines the current values.
Instead of buying a brand new 500 what if you had bought a top of the range scorpio instead for very similar money back then - what would the grannie be worth now - a grand if your lucky for a low miler, if the world was fair then thats what 500s should also be fetching these days, and nobody would care what stickers on its arse end.

That sticker could be copied easily including the colour change and no one would know any different apart from the person applying the sticker some people really are mad but each to their own, and if the car was mint and original why would it need a new sticker anyway
