Default car does not switch off

hi all a friend of mine has got an escort mk4 with an 1100cc engine.the problem is that when he turns the ignition off it keeps on running for a few seconds.any ideas of the fault.

Timing, or carbon build up on the exhasut valves.

Back when I was playing around with Mini's, we used to add an anti-dieseling solenoid from an A-series Metro, it's just a valve that when the ignition is switched off opens to atmosphere and prevents it from running on.

Running on or "dieseling" is indeed normally caused by the timing, but also can be by carbon build up in the cylinder creating a hot carbon spot that ignites the fuel.
As said anti dieseling valves were fitted that simply opened to atmosphere making the mixture so weak it wouldn't ignite, pretty sure the 1100's had these as standard though.
