In car Fuel Tank (Fuel cell) Need some advice
Firstly thanks for viewing my topic about In Car fuel tanks
Hello everyone, I'm building my track car and i need some advice from them in the game. I'm building a Mark4 Escort Zetec/duratec and its going tobe used on the road and track days, it will be around 380-400bhp and currently facing a huge safety problem, i have removed the spair wheel well and plated this up to allow me to run a incar fuel tank, im also running plaggy windows, so i will run the filler through the drivers rear window. Now i face a large problem with the fuel tank. As you know it wouldnt be a problem with a cosworth that can be easly made with a fire wall however the escort has no protection whats so ever in regards this. Now i can just weld up a sheet from the bottom to the roof so how would i make this safe? incase of a fire?
Heres what i think, but i'm not sure if this is correct.
Build a Box around the fuel tank stoping anything getting out of the tank, such as flaims and provents the act of being caught alight, build the box with some breathers to stop it exspoding if caught on fire.
Them with things like what i have to face, such as no pre-fire wall, such as nothing to build on, what are my options?
this is a real serious question, and i would like to get some more information
thanks

20K+ Super Poster.
Why not run the tank under the welded up plate that covers the old spare wheel well, if that's allowed ?, it lowers the cg of the weight so helps that way, and there is a firewall that way.
As you can see I'm not at all ofa with the regs so may sound a bit odd!!

you're either looking at encasing the tank in a metal box or as tabetha has said mounting it under the car so it's outside the cabing area imo.
i have a mate who runs a mk1 escort with the tank under the boot floor, and have seen several instances of the tank being cased in a box. both of those WERE (and i believe still are) accepted by the MSA so should be plenty good enough for track days.
running the tank under the car may be problematic if you're planning to have the car road legal. not from a legal standpoint thoguh.. more due to the fact that you might not have much space for a good sized tank and therefore need to fill it up more often than you would with a car using a full size one.
in fact.. aren't mk4 tanks under the rear seats anyway? might just be able to get somethign to mount there if you don't want to use the standard one....

I am/was going to go with a similar set-up to Martin Hadlands EsCos; ProAlloy boot mounted tank (safety foamed etc). Would this get through an SVA test and be road legal? Not worried about MSA regs as wont be competing, only the odd open track day.
Sorry to jump in on your thread DPUD.

check out the for sale areas mate, im selling a pro alloy foam filled and gated tank at the mo.
i had it in the boot as it was was, and the car was wrote off by someone crashing into the back of me and luckily the tank was untouched
will also come with filler neck and locking cap
if used with PTFE lined fuel lines it wont smell inside the car either, mine didnt and the fuel lines ran from the bulkhead at the front, to the boot area

Was yours road legal and any problems with MOT etc? Anybody know if running a boot mounted tank and in car lines would pose any issues with an SVA test?
How much are you looking for the tank?
Cheers, Chris
