Default Mondeo 1.8 duratec no compression, need new engine anything to look for?

In laws mondeo 1.8 lx duratec petrol, 03 plate has given up, looks like they need a new engine and the local garage is trying to screw them, i was going to try and source a second hand one from ebay etc but before i buy the wrong one is there different types or are they pretty much all the same block etc and i can swap it out with no hassle??

1.8 Duratecs are all the same mate, should be a simple enough swap. Was it the inlet flaps that destroyed it?

inlet flaps??? is that the same problem you get with the 3.0 diesel bmw's, the swirl flaps little screw falls off and goes thru the engine?

Yep, pretty much. The flaps have little plastic 'bearings' that wear out and eventually the flaps get sucked into the engine. They revised the design from late '02 build date, but some '03s have been known to fail. One way you can tell is there is a breather pipe under the inlet that goes to the block and its 13mm instead of a smaller size.

if the comprestion has dropped on cycliners 3&4 i would check the head gasket! alot of the 1.8 duratecs i get in have blown there gasket between 3&4

it has been know to blow inbetween other cyclinder to but 3&4 is most common

ive seen a lot of these with shagged piston rings and snapped chains, easy enough to repair allthough can be exspensive, but being as common as it is its sometimes worth repairing the engine rather than fitting another that may fail in no time at all
