Default ST170

Need new car as my fez is too small, too low and too unreliable, was thinking about getting a MK1 Focus ST170, what sort of size are the boots in these, I used to have a Y-reg Audi A3 and the babys pram fits in perfect so dont want anything much smaller than that.

Also, how are these on fuel and reliability?

Reliable, electrics around the Lambda sensors go wrong a lot. Ok-ish on fuel, boot is big but tuning potential pretty limited as they're quite quick standard. Throttle bodies etc highly recommended.

Horrendous on fuel for a 2.0 N/A engine, expect around 250 miles to a tank, my ST that I've got now is getting on for twice the power and it is more frugal on the fuel.

Nice cars to drive, I liked mine, thought it handled really well. Not very fast in a straight line, always felt like it was missing something, never figured out quite what though. Inlet manifold runner controls and lambda sensors always fail on them, can work out quite costly.

I wouldn't recommend one personally, get a 2.0 ESP model if you can, much better on fuel, well specced, cheaper insurance, not really any slower and a lot more reliable!

Your going to get mixed opinions on any car mate, I like mine and touch wood it has been ok with no major glitches. I know of several others that run fine with none of the problems listed ever rearing thier heads. You either buy a bad one or you dont. The downside of the 170 and the reason fuel economy is average is the power delivery comes in late hence the need to keep the revs up and subsequently waste fuel.
If you want a practical fun hatch that can be tuned however buy a CTR, I have run a MK2 ST for seven months also and to be fair certainly didnt save any money on fuel over the 170 , in fact I would disagree and say it was worse. Mind you it is a 2.5 and as quick as my old ctr so no surprises there .

Mine is in forsale section and a big pic of the boot.. In my view they are good on fuel and very reliable having NEVER had a problem with mine in 3.5yrs.. unfortunately the clutch needs looking at now but sure with that relaced it will carry on with ease for many more yrs.

Cheers guys, I think ill either go with the ST170 or the 2.0 Esp as the only Mk2 focus I could afford would be a 1.6 and I want somehting quicker, was thinking about a Volvo 850 T5 Estate but not too sure how reliable it will be. But will probs go with the MK1 Focus and decide which kind after I check with the insurance.

Danny B - I like your focus, unfortunately I need to wait for a few things getting fixed on my fiesta and then wait while I try to sell it otherwise I would defo come take a look at your car, if its still availible after ive sold my fez I will give you a shout mate.

Had my ST170 over 3 years, had to change the clutch but had no electrical gremlins, no knocks, no bangs no EML nothing, it has been serviced well and never let me down. 100% totally shite on fuel, i can get sub 20mpg but i suspect a faulty lambda is causing this, which i have yet to fit. Good cars, handle well, they are nippy, but not quick. Good spec also, hold out for Xenon headlights and climate control though.
Problem is an ST170 is in its own class, there are very few similar powered cars around so most cars are allot slower or allot quicker. Best blast i had was with a new golf GTI, he nearly had me too.

I like theses cars alot. They arnt that quick either. If the wife didnt do 50 miles a day to get to and from work we would have one.

The focus is a cracking car.If your gonna go for the ST170 try and get one with the full leather trim cause the front seats are mint.
