Default Death Of an Automotive city

Not sure if any of you Ladies & Gentlemen will find this of interest, but you never know.
I find this kind of thing quite fascinating, the crumbling architecture has a very "life without people" feel to it.

Hard to imagine these buildings were once founded on the booming American automotive industry of the post war years, their spender now dulled, merely an echo now of their glorious past.

It is astounding that buildings of such grandeur are just left to disintigrate like that...

There's a certain 'romance' to the crumbling remains of the once thriving automotive industry but in a very sad way indeed.

Very good photo's as well, really managed to capture the 'vibe' but what a terrible waste!
Many items in these photo's such as the woodpanneling, bannisters and even decorations in stone would fetch huge money over here as salvage!

That is quite incredible.

Hard to believe that people still live in that city when parts of it are like this. You'd think buildings such as churches, or the UA Theatre especially, would be saved and taken on by charities and things. They often seem to be over here.

As someone says above, it almost looks like chernobyl or something. All the books still in the library, the photos in the Police station, like it's just been abandoned in a rush.

My brother went to the motor show there this year and said it really was an awful place.

someone will eventually buy the land and do something with it, but it's not really a financially viable proposition to redo them as they will probably be worth less that whats been spent on them

even demolishing them will cost a few quid

It says in the link, buildings were built with the income from the booming motor industry in Detroit, then when manufacturing went elsewhere where it was a lot cheaper, money stopped rolling in to detroit and the people left.

Awesome photography, some of those buildings are stunning!

obv not teh whole city is like that, would like to see it in context
but if there ar eno jobs and no money theres no point spending money or repairing buildings that aint used to reusing land when theres is no new use
does show how one mans shite is another mans millions, if those buildings and land were in the uk theres millions in em and desperate need to use them

detroit is the ultimate example of urban decay. in the hights of motor city and the motown days, it was one of the most well known citys on the planet, now its full of poverty, and has one of the highest murder rates per city, in america.

if you look at everything over a long enough period, you will see that it all flows like liquid. buildings are like glaciers that are like mountains that are there and then gone.

pretty amazing how so much stuff was abandoned clearly in a hurry. like all the books in the library. Youd think if other librarys didnt have them then they would give them away.

The growth of the Jap industry killing off industry all over the world

this was the first place to be hit and hit hard and fast

It is happening all over the world , just not quite as fast as it hit this city that was basicly built around and for the motor industry

Got to agree with the all over the world statement, could even be all over Britain really.
We went the wrong way in Swansea years ago when we took the call centre route rather than keeping with industry and now their pretty much both gone forever.
Now the ford plants closed, along with many others that's pretty much it for well paid manufacturing work in Swansea,I suppose there's morganite but that's really it.
Big shame,as it was once the industrial capital of the world!!

well the real blame is greed and the high demand by all of us for ever cheaper goods yet the same if not better quality. its pretty obvious that with cheaper labour in the far east and abroad generally that we would price our selves out of competitiveness.

weve only ourselves to blame.

Spooky pictures. Amazing how a place can become so deserted.

Even in the uk I look around at places that seem to be just used and not maintained and see them being run down and down into shite holes you wouldn't want to live in.

I also wonder how long even when maintained a house will last, I mean mine was built in 1935, when will the brickwork, cement age to a point it is no longer stable?

I think the corporations are to blame not us. Car prices havent changed really, but revenus have, then again so have tax rates and oil prices.
