Head Work
Hello everybody,
Can people please call out some names and numbers to the rest of the class, of firms that you know can make a decent head for my car? I want to use somebody who is proven in making 300+bhp CVH Turbo heads and cams as I have run out of ideas.
Are Blue Sprint any good? Their site is down and I cannot find their number :S
Karl is busy
Vulcan are a bunch of inbreds
Thanks everyone.

John - Karl is busy, I tried Puma Racing before... thanks anyway.
Ryan - You got any ideas on who? I would have thought most firms would have only delt with Cosworths.
Cheers

The best head people are:
Dave Smith (Smith Engine Technologies) - But no one can get hold of him
Nick Waples - Who's gone to Spain
Which leaves: Neil Roper - www.roperdevelopments.co.uk
But not forgetting the CVH Guru - Karl Norris

what about Ian Howell.. or does he only specialise in ztecs.. Could be totally wrong, but i swear i heard people mention him
Failing that
I know ya gotta wait, but they are PROVEN.. a Karl Knorris one.. depends on wait, but it seems your car has been off the road getting painted/blinged up etc for a while, so whats a few more months

Karl is busy up until end of May. I cannot miss out on other year of shows
Matt and John - We weren't all that happy with what the guy from Puma racing said to us when we building the engine last time, I cannot remember why though. His site was down when I last checked, but he might be worth another try.
Virdi - We have Neil Roper on the case, speaking to him 2morro hopefully.
Mike - Again, same as before, we originally appraoched Harvey when building the other engine, he was totally not interested in building a high powered CVH
Westy - I wouldn't piss on Ian Howell if he was on fire after the abortion of a head he originally did for me, and especially after the comments he made to Mr C at Brunters (just so you know, the engine failed back in December after only a few months)
CheeRS guys, any more ideas?

Yes, AFPMSL at the head Ian did. I could buy a head-porting kit from Demon Tweeks and get my Nanny to do a better job than the one we received from Ian.
Still had MEGA Det evident all over it and looked as though it had been ported with a Flymo.
I used to get on with Ian, but my opinion of his work changed as a result of both that and his comments made at Brunters.

To be honest, it was just someone i recalled who DID do heads, as after all the people mentioned i didnt know anyone else apart from local places round here, but they are not really tried and tested if ya know what i mean.. Didnt know if his were of decent quality or upto the job, but obviously not
Literally just a name out of my head, but Jamsports?? again, not had any dealings ect to comment, just a thought tho..
Really, you are best of waiting for Karl IMO.. worth it, as they are tried and tested and from what i keep seeing, only praise for the chap :
sorry to hear about the engine failure.. not having much luck What was the cause, surely not the head?? :S

A Power Engineering head is a Vulcan head, as Vulcan have been building Power's engines for years now. You get the exact same thing, but if you buy it from Powers it will cost you a couple hundred quid more.... strange that lol.

i know of a car with the pumaracing head on and it drives amazingly. must say, off boast its great. If remember rightly the car is a 1.9 cvh and made 292 bhp.
I would recommend it. Its not cheap either though.

I would go with puma. But he is very busy and you will pay good money.
I have heard good things from a company called CTM in Ilford. Dave Walker seems to recomend them as well.

Cylinder Head Developments look a good bet. Colin, S1Man off here had one ported there, but with std valves. He did a before and after power run at Nobles, and there was a BIG improvement.
Tony - how did ur engine fail in the end?

Thank you very much for all the suggestions guys, alot of the people you have mentioned though we have already tried before. One of the main problems at the moment is the time factor more than the money. The guy I really want to use is just too busy, but we have a few tricks up our short sleeves lol.
Paul - We were going to use Mr C's nan, but she is far too busy doing Skyline race engines at the moment

Yeah Tony, People who dismiss my work will always find a special place in my heart!
Phil Holmes was more that happy to accept that old CVH head with a light peppering of det marks, and surprisingly (to you only?), the car is an absolute missile when it grips in 4th. 122CFM at 0.450" and 10". Karl will explain this, and also explain the HP potential.
Christian, I don't use a Flymo (except to face them with). I port using a Golf club and cold chisel. Didn't hurt Sunny's, Paul J's, Keith Taylors, My car, Paul Roberts, Sid's.....
Ref the comments I made about your car - Yep you got me - I laughed when it blew up, and laughed even more when Christian said 'it could have been one of many things' - That's a great advert for a tuner!
Ref your orig enquiry - As you don't know a thing about cylinder heads, may I suggest you approach a race engine firm (not those in PF & FF mag, like myself), but a specialist like Rick Wood, Neil Cunliffe, Jim Garrard, Andy Weston, Dave Smith, Nick Waples. Or you could buy Christian one of those kits from Demon Tweeks.
Just remember, If you don't know any better, don't spend your money with them. You were very lucky I gave a full refund without argument. Most wouldn't even offer!!
Right, Tht's my post for this year, see you all in 2006!

Ian, as you know, I have always got on well with you and always have time for a chat, whenever the situation arises, but the head that Tony bought was on my recommendation and for what little I know about head-porting, that really didn't look as though it was worth the money you wanted for it. We could have had a simple porting job done by someone that we had previously dismissed and had it flow-checked for a fraction of what that one was. Tony paid the extra to get something a little bit special, or thats how we understood it. If the untrained eye can identify what looks like poor workmanship to the point that we would advise the customer not to use it, then there must be reason for doubt at least. I don't mind saying that the Vulcan head actually looked alot better (I'm not commenting on Flow characteristics) and was half the price. I'm not doubting that the Flow characteristics were as you say they were, but it looked unfinished, like it had been done in a rush to be honest.
I haven't seen one of Karls heads, but from what I understand, not only does the performance speaks volumes, but the finished product looks like something that you feel reassured by. I can't verify this statement as I haven't seen one in the 'flesh'. The business would go Karls way, of that I am pretty sure, if only he weren't so busy. We can be a little flexible, but we really need the head by the end of March at the latest.
The whole discussion of Cylinder Heads is very complicated. I have a list as long as your arm of people that could do the head. Some of them have already been mentioned and some are people that are reliatively unheard of within PF and RSOC, but who work on Competition stuff. However, there are other factors involved in the choice.
With Karl sadly out of the equation, I think I now know who will end up doing it.

In fact never had a problem with either of our engines.
Sunny on the other hand.................
His engine was always being bloody rebuilt!! That boy could never make his mind up
PS Ian my head looks wank. But i know it'll do the job.
PPS I'd recomend Ian to anyone Even if all he does is take the piss out of me

Shame you cant wait for a head from Karl, his workmanship is second to none even if he is a right bugger to get hold of
As mentioned there are plenty of alteratives, hope you get it sorted and back on the road Tony+christian! Would be such a shame not to see this car at the shows this year!!
Good Luck,
Dan
