I know it's a really dumb idea to tow with a front or rear wheel lift but seem to recall it not being a clever idea to tow with 4 wheels on the road fro any distance or speed but can't for the life of me remember why???

Hmm. Sure I remember somebody posting an explanation on here as to why it shouldn't be done for any real distance or speed. Maybe I was mistaken, wouldn't be the first time

Im sure ive read somwhere that you shouldnt tow a 4x4 car for along time and not to go over a certain speed. But like Pete said its just the same as the car been out of gear and coasting down the road.

Depends on which car you are talking about, if it's got permenent 4wd like in the case of the fords then it has to be towed with all 4 wheels on the ground or all of them lifted as one axle spinning faster than the other burns out the centre diff within a few hundred yards.
A lot of newer cars have auto boxes so they can't be towed unless the engine is running.
