Default Alternator Question

The small wire that goes onto the alternator.

The wire on the car isnt working. When you touch a live onto the alt, it then charges but even when you remove the live it still charges so it just switches the alternator to charge.

So the question is, is it a ignition live that stays on when igniton is on or is it on a relay or something that switches the alt on then turns the switch wire off?

Sorry if that doesnt make sense

it is an ignition live that goes through a bulb and a diode on the dash, the bulb is probably blown in the dash.

Cheers

The dash was taken out for a stack dash so that would explain why it doesnt work.

So in order to put it throught thr ignition light on the stack dash its just a case of an ignition live into the bulb on the stack dash and then you need a diode between than and the alternator?

What diode do you need?

Try it with just an ig live through the bulb, if it goes out when the alternator is charging then you are sorted, the diode is there to stop the alternator "back feeding" and keeping things on when the ignition is off (i think)

If you are feeding the lignition live into the bulb and it is always live when the ignition (car started) is on how does the bulb turn off out of interest?

when its not charging there is an earth through the coil on the alternator, when it starts to charge it becomes live, this cancels out the live from your dash, therefore no current is flowing (+ and + will not flow) so the light goes out ya

Ahh right i get it.

If it needs diode is there is specific one?

Cheers for the help.

It doesn't even need a light bulb, just feed the IND with a positive 12v and it will start the charging cycle, once charging the IND terminal turns positive and hence puts the light out, as it is now then receiving a live from both sides as before when the engine wasn't turning the alt IND was earth/negative which of course lights the bulb, it getting the live direct from the iggy switch in position 2.
Revving over about 3000 rpm will also start charging, until the engine is switched off, the live to the alt stays there 100% of the time on the IND terminal.

different way of saying the same thing, use a bulb so you know its charging though.

You have to use a bulb or a diode, otherwise the alternator d+ (little wire) will flow
back to your ignition and the car won't shut down. If the alternator is charging the d+
terminal could deliver about 5 amp, enough to keep your car running (or the diodes in the alternator will blow)

Are you sure theres a diode, if so then surely the current would not be able to get back to the bulb from the alt or vice versa due to it being able to only flow one way? Or do you mean the diode is on the ignition side? So far as I knew it was just a bulb.
