Very sad news.

My brother is a Firefighter and I know deaths of firefighters on duty in this Country are few and far between. This is quite a shock.

My thoughts go out to their families.

I tried for 4 1/2 years to get into the fire service... political correctness and equal opportunities kept me out though I would still jump at the chance for a career in the service. They are indeed very brave people! I take my hat off to you all

Don't give up mate, it took my brother 4 attempts to get in (Got in at the fourth go) and he won the award for best new recruit when he completed his training. He loves being a firefighter, although he does have to do a second job to make ends meet.

Ive applied to so many countys in an effort to just get a foot in the door.. london, herts, kent, essex, i was even prepared to move around the country, so long as i could get in.. applied to hampshire, went to open days, spoke to firefighters, joined a firefighter forum... ive done pretty much everything i could think of. But i just couldnt get in! I know its not because i couldnt do the job... i worked as a personal trainer for few years and kept my fitnees to an excellent standard, have a degree in sports science. It got very disheartening after a while so i took a job in IT, been in it for nearly 5 years now. My fitness has slipped and i guess im at an age where realistically they would take a fresh out of school 18yr old as oppose to a *cough* thirty *cough* year old IT bod!

I genuinely believe they would give it to a woman or a one armed blind immigrant rather than me, just so their stats look good! (no disrespect to women or one armed blind immigrants )

My brother felt like you did Daveyboy when he kept missing out, he evntually got in when he was 25. They don't take on too many 18 year olds, more 23-28 year olds.

ah well thats me fooked then im a whole different tickbox to them lol! am 32 this year! i never even got to have an interview with them and im sure your Bro can tell you how long it takes to fill out those bloomin application forms!

food for thought though you never know, i might get the urge to apply again

sorry to hear this Dan, not good, it hasn't happened for years , we have such good rules here, v v sad, we found out this morning at work, Sorry you had to go and recover them, that can't be a good job when it's someone you know.
V V Sorry and my deepest sympathy to all involved.
It's times like this when I wish people who say we don't deserve decent pay should come and see what we do and how things affect us,Good luck over the next few days buddy, I came on here after the Ufton Nervert train crash last year to get my feelings out,I find talking helps alot, a problem halved is a problem shared.

Hello Bud........ aint had alot of time for car stuff recently.... Been doing my place up to sell and have bought a new pad with the missus so what with work, gym and DIY it doesnt leave time for much else!!!! Havnt even had time to clean my car so had it valeted today......

bad news respect to the firemen thankless job ie
put out the fire kids throw bricks at you
i did the test twice but never passed but mate from school did
tests seemed wierd at the time 15 years ago
fractions maths tests and weird match the butterfly
tests but RIP men died doing the job they loved
