i have a 82 degree thermostat in my car, why wont it open when i use boiling water from a kettle then put it into a cup
but it will open if i boil the water in a pan for a while?
Because the cup absorbs enough heat instantly to drop the temp lower than the opening temp, and the actual action of pouring cools the water also.

i did'nt think it would drop from 100 degrees to below 82 by pouring the water into a cup?
i will have to get a thermometer and test it

Drops it to mid 70s usually as you will see from you test. The stat is also thermostatic so requires prolonged exposure to those temperatures in order to operate.
As an aside qustion - what have people seen there cossie temp spike to before 82 degree stat opening.
I got worried on engine dyno when it almost hit 100c (head temp via ecu) first time I fired engine up (4wd thermostat system and light load varying throttle running engine in).
I just dunk in a old saucepan on the cooker, with a thermometer, well actually I use the normal cooking ones but hope the gf doesn't read this!!

I do the same and it works quite accurately.... also Stu's motor emporium can sell you ones that open at 78 and this is very useful. Another thing that works to me is water wetter from redline this helps too.
As the thermostat gets older the spring can get tired and vary the opening temp.
