Built and mapped correctly they can be very powerfull and reliable.
If you have had a bad past with these engines you have been building them wrongly.
The cylinder head was designed at Cosworth and is just a slightly scaled down version of a YB head.
In an ealier post you mentioned that the gearboxes were not good which is rubbish, the F28 has been proven to take 580 + bhp.
I do agree that the 4x4 system is not so good.
Without the XE there would be far less MK2 Ford Escorts rallying, less Caterham's and many other car racing, which use the XE in some form.
In rallycross, the XE based engine, used in turbo form (extensively modified) has been able the beatsome of the best Ford YB and other brands of engine, in the sport.
The current crop of vauxhall engines you mentioned, fail mainly because incorrect mapping (go faster chips) sold by some of the so called vauxhall tuning companies.

To find a decent quick XE is rare in my eyes, Most c20lets i see are in corsas and advertised as 300bhp (doubt very much)
My old Let had xe inlet cam and kent vernier, 1.9mm cometic, new mahles, acl bearings, saab reds, eds phase 2, 3" tx downpipe, recon k16, proper fmic none of this frontera trash, forge actuator, fse fuel reg and some other bits, at 16 psi went very well but was riddled with problems, this was built by chris astley too![Surprised](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/bigcry.gif)
Friends vauxhalls have had dodgy boxes, my f16 in my nova was shit and so was the mechanical driven f28 i had which blew its diff!

The specification of you LET and who built it explains your deep dislike of vauxhalls.
99% of the vauxhall gearbox problems are down to poor setup of the gear selector linkage

yep, the previous owner of mine didnt fit 16v gte linkages as it was '' too much work'' so kept the 8v, which fucked up 1st/2nd and reverse the 2nd day of owning it, so i adjusted it and a few days later killed my f28 while going from 4th to 3rd rolling round a roundabout

I would agree about the corsa with 300bhp statment, even the hybrid K16 struggles to provide enough air for 285 bhp.

inaccurate rollers haha... its great how my cometic headgasket ( which peoiple have used many times over on 400+bhp lets) was crushed inbetwen each cylnder, and stretched the Arp head bolts so oil leaked from the back of the head, this was at a indicated 16 psi.
What mods does your mate have??
You sure that aint a fucking diesel? 4500-5000 peak torque and power? jeeesus!

no matter how good you make a vx, the ford seems to be more than just the sum of it's parts, you give a vx a big powerfull engine and 4wd and no matter how quick it is and how much tech it's got in it, it's just a powerfull car with 4wd and loads of tech, much like an audi or jap stuff, but with the ford you sense that there is just that little bit more going on but it's not quantifiable

My daily driver is a XE calibra, had it 6 years now on and its been as good as gold.
Its actually pretty good on fuel too for what it is and the xe is a great engine
Worst point is the handling which to be honest is not great, although i had a 16v xe cavalier sri before and that was even worse!
Dont think i would ever buy a newish one over a ford though

do you go rallying coz you have an xe engine
no its coz you have a cult car with rallying pedigree
even if an irish man had an escort with no engine he would still try rallying it

as for mods to the corsa with an xe inlet cam mod (standard c20xe inlet cam)
standard power
268bhp 278lbft @13psi
with xe inlet cam retarded 2 degrees
287bhp 305lbft @13psi
boost raised to 15psi
303bhp 322lbft RESULT
all dyno runs done same day, operator reckons 18psi will see him to 330ish but 300 in a 900kg car is plenty

My xe inlet cam was retarded 7 degrees i swear, could of been 2 though, so at 20 psi on a s144 hybrid your looking at 330-340bhp? Dont believe that lol

i might just buy this reliable legal as fuck corsa!
£3200 for a gearbox which is gonna last 5 mins, a chip i aint got a clue about, a standard actuator and restrictive downpipe, and 4 stud! awesome <3
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2298996.htm
left hooker i was gererally speaking if he had a hybrid, and damo yea it used to run so rich it could flame on idle, at only 3.5 bar fuel pressure!

cossies aint reliable, expensive, rust and are abused, but i still dont care as even a fucked 205 bottom end is worth more than a brand new corsa pmsl plus easy to work on, parts are everywhere, and help is easy to get too

i used to own a st170 focus and it was piss poor. em light was permanantly on with lambda problems (went through 5 pairs in 3 years) it drunk fuel like a tramp drinks cider, tyres lasted a few months if that, brake pads and discs every 5 months, it was bloody slow (standard with panel filter and eibachs) it rattled and banged from underneath and was generally shit.
i had a nova which i paid £150 for, we threw a c20xe, f20, coilovers, scorpion exhaust, 300mm brakes and 15's on it....engine had done 140k. we put filters, plugs, new fluids and new belt in and i gave it 30k of hard hard abuse and the only thing that went wrong was the fuel pump relay from where it had got waterlogged.
for me there isnt a finer marque....both brands have knocked out some cracking cars as well as some pretty shonky ones

I've hated the Omega since i did bottom arms on one and dropped the inner nuts into the subframe! and the HT leads, wtf is that all about?!
Few mate have had vectras and drove ok really, but underneath all have been hanging, suspension bits, emission failures for mot etc
All the petrol ones seem to have cracked manifolds or egr problems.
not really had much to do with the corsas.
