Default MK5 Fez Zetec-S...

...seen a few cheapies cropping up in the last couple of weeks. Is one for sub-£1k just going to be a pile of shit?

Minor arch rust doesn't upset me too much, and I know they can rust other places, but is one going to be pants at that money? Engine melting material and stuff?

Got a Civic Coupe at the moment, but I'm a bit fed up with it so fancy a change. I do like the little Fez so was just wondering if I'd be buying trouble, or if there are decent ones out there for less than £1k?

Also, what sort of MPG do they do? Not so fussed about round down, but I do drive on motorways a bit, so don't want something that will be revving it's cock off constantly and using loads of fuel.

I should probably grow up and buy a Mondeo diesel or something, but I want something a bit more fun that that to be honest!

That's the thing that puts me off really. Hear horror stories of bottom end failure. Good fun little car, and seeing a few around the £8/900 mark, but don't want to buy something that will just melt a month later, or that drinks on motorways!

They are worth a look at for that price, as you said the earlier models(phase 1 metal rocker cover) had a weaker bottem end but if its had the oil changed like it should have and a few services then it should be ok. Can get new engines for £250-300. I sold my X plate one to younger brother 2 years ago....107K on the clock and no cambelt change, still going strong, no knocks or squeeks and regularly tracked.

I would have another one tomorrow if I could.

What sort of mpg would yours do Adam? Over distances more?

I'm not fussed around town, as I don't use my car too much here, but do drive to my missus' or back to family and that's a longer run, so don't want something that will be sittin at stupid revs all the time. Don't remember what sort of revs these do at 70 in fifth.

Just curious on motorway economy really. It probably isn't an ideal distance car, but all the practical stuff is boring as fuck!

The engines are ok as long as they have been looked after. The wifes1.25 16v fiesta is spot on.The engine has got neary 95,000 on it.All the engine has had is timing belt n tensioner, aux belt and coil pack.

The only thing with these fiestas is rot.

MPG wasnt the worst I can remember getting 46mpg once when driving like a granny, normally you would get around 35 ish......when I bought it 5 years ago I got 100 miles for £10!A full tank would get you around 320 miles maybe.

70mph...revs maybe around 3200rpm maybe a bit more.

My sister has got a focus with the 1.6 engine in which is the same I think?! That's got 150ish-k on it and it's still going strong with minimal sevicing.

I quite fancy one of them fiesta's, reckon it will be a lot more fun than my escort gti!

Gavin.

I'm selling one at moment. 80k on clock, but its got a 50k puma lump in it.

All pollyed up, no rust, big breaks, fresh mot, manfold and decat ect.

Does about 35 Mpg round town not booting it every where. Does a solid 40 on a run.

Want 1500 for it but open to offers. It's red btw lol .

I bought a silver, one 1 owner 60k mint example inside and out completely original for £1500, to use over the winter instead of the escort. Good little cars I get about 260 miles to a full tank with mixed driving.

Doesn't sound like they're too juicey then.

Might take a look at a couple if they're local. Can't hurt!

Fantastic cars, what I've got as my project. Owned them for around 6 years now, and worth it, handle great, look good, and have a bit of poke.

There's also potential to tune them, mines running just short of 170bhp on the standard 1.6 internals and my mates is just short of 180bhp which is forged!

They're a bargain at the moment. Plenty of shabby cars about, but also lots of well loved ones too.

If the engine does let go, the Puma engine is a doddle to fit (see the next issue of Fast Ford for a guide )

Don't think I'd be getting one to modifiy it to be honest. Got a project on the go already which is sucking up plenty of funds and should be pretty special with any luck. Hopefully special enough to get you interested Dan!

Just a standard one to run about in every day would do me fine

Still worth going for one if its cheap, major problems are rust. Most other parts are cheap as chips!

My project to spurr you on:

Great cars if all the bushes are fresh, if they aren't (especially rear beam ) then they can feel awful!

To quote evo magazine and a mirror of my ownership.....
