what to do with the v5 after scrapping a car
i weighed in my saph shell today at a scrap merchant so was going to send the v5 away saying it had been scrapped, but there doesnt seem to be a bit like there used to be to date and sign.
do i have to get the scrap yard rep to sign the yellow part of the v5 and send that off?

Yeah, they can do it online Lee or you can if you want to play it safe although it's in his interests to do it.it's the red section to scrap it,yellow to sell to a trader.

just read this on the dvla site
Telling DVLA you no longer have the vehicle
If you’re not given a CoD or your vehicle is not being destroyed, then you should complete the V5C/3 ‘Notification of sale or transfer’ section of your vehicle registration certificate (V5C), and send it to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BD.
You should get a letter confirming that you’re no longer responsible for the vehicle. If you don’t get this letter within four weeks, phone 0300 790 6802 for further advice. Text phone users can phone 0300 123 1279.
If you have broken up the vehicle yourself, you must either continue to tax it or tell the DVLA that you are keeping it off the public road. You can do this by making a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification). You will need to make a SORN every year until you have taken it to an ATF, or told DVLA that you longer have it.

Maybe worth popping back up the scrappy to ask him to sort it for you if he hasn't already.I was sure you could do it online but that was a while back I suppose.

why sorn a car you no longer have,i assume you maybe think that the tags and v5 may be worth money 1 day and its worth holding onto them,i very much doubt a 4x4 cossie id will ever be worth anything so why bother.
and you cant tax it or insure it AS YOU NO LONGER HAVE IT AND CANT GET TAX WITHOUT AN MOT so you get a grip.

I think he was being ironic because the DVLA offers the guidance that if you have broken the car yourself you can continue to SORN or tax it.
It's not like anyone would actually want another form to fill in every year, never mind paying the tax for a car that has been scrapped - even if you could without an MOT!

went to the dvla office who were as good as useless, explained the shells went to a metal processor and not an atc, they said a bit of headed notepaper from the scrappy might do,im just going to send off the v5's with a letter from myself and see what happens!
