Default Focus lights flickering problem, please help

Hi all,

Got a weird and annoying problem with my 2000 focus zetec.

Basically all the lights flicker on it, headlights, rear lights, dash lights every light seems to flicker at exactly the same time, which makes driving at night
quite dangerous.

Also after it's been doing this for a minute or 2 all the warning
lights come on the dash, speedo needle shoots round to 140mph, and odometer reads just lines.

Has anyone had this problem on there focus or know what's wrong, as it's a little worrying when my missus and our little one are in the car.

Any help is much appreciated as always

Cheers

Baz

if everything is doing it, then i'd make a guess at an earth problem,
and as it is all doing it at the same time, possibly the negative battery terminal, loose/ dirty/poor connection??

seems an odd problem for sure!

Flickering in time with engine RPM could mean alternator is on its way out...

The smart charge will make the lights flicker slightly every now and then, normally when it's ticking over, you will see it flick very slightly 4-5 times. On the ST170, if the dash lights flicker, turn the brightness down slightly, that will stop it.

But the OP seems to be having more serious flickering so it must be something else!

the early focus's had bad earth issues with the lights,
theres an earth connection behind a headlight(n/s i think)
the wires look intact but corrode in the terminal, cut the terminal off
and fit new 1, this usualy solves the earth prob,
tbh i dont remember it causing flickering but if its got a dodgy connection it could so worth a try anyhow
