driving 7.5 tonne wagons?
when i used to work for a recovery firm years ago all you needed was a licence.
when i hired one about 4 years ago to move house it was the same i think.
ive been asked if i can drive a 7.5 tonne wagon because a mate needs a driver to deliver some stuff to london but he passed his test later so he hasnt got the entitlement on his licence.
if he hires me a 7.5 tonne wagon, can i still drive it-what about these digital tacho's now?

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
Yes you can mate, so I believe. Not over 7.5t though. I, like you, passed ages ago so I have the entitlement on my licence. Just had to renew my licence and thought they may remove it, but it has stayed on it.

You could fall foul of Vosa if you are carrying business goods for a mate, if it was personal stuff you'd probably be O.k

.my mate normally does the movements for this company but because its a big job including a lot of booths a long way they have decided to use 7.5 tonne wagons.because he hasnt got entitlement he asked me if i wanted to do it and i said yes.no-one mentioned a driver card to me at the place or when we collected the wagon.its only that the other driver asked me if i had a card that got me thinking....and i looked it up when i got back
its all set up now, with 6 people on board and another installation team in london.cant really get out of it now without causing huge disruption and maybe losing my mate his yearly contract.

my work seem to think i can do a print out in the morning, and in the evening. but cant tell me how its done. i have a card and havent forgotten it yet so not had to find out a way. cant you just pay someone else to drive the lorry for you? or is it too short notice to find someone?

i believe this is only correct when you are applying for your card or you have lost it. you can do it if you forgot your card.
so i think you can run without a card as long as you have applied for one and do a print out on a morning and evening.
edited to say you can only run on print outs for 2 weeks

here is some more info
http://www.roadtransport.com/RoadLeg...chographs.html
Can a digitally equipped vehicle be driven without a driver card?
Drivers aren’t obligated to apply for a smart card but may not drive a digital tacho equipped vehicle without one unless their card has been lost or stolen. A driver may continue to drive without his card for 15 calendar days in these circumstances. However, a replacement card must be applied for within seven calendar days.
If driving without a card, or if the driver card is damaged or malfunctions, drivers must by law use the vehicle unit’s facility to produce printed records of all relevant details, including the driver’s own details, and sign the printouts.
The printouts must be produced at the beginning and end of each journey.
Note that drivers who have been issued with a smart card must carry it with them at all times when driving a vehicle that falls under EU hours rules - whether or not they are driving a digital equipped vehicle.

i feel sick now........
the company has a big contract to supply these botths over the next week starting sunday afternoon. everyone got together today and its all going ahead.
its only when i saw the digi card machine in the truck and the only other driver mentioning a card that i have looked into it.
my mate who put me onto it is away on holiday-he only ever asked me if i could drive a 7.5 tonne lorry, and i said i could.had no idea of all this card stuff.
looks like ive got 2 options;
take a chance
or
pull out of it and fuck it all up for everyone else involved

cossie fan (unluckerly)
Read the post above Jay,you can print the details out via the tacho system, job done fella.there must be a system for exactly that reason.it's probably like a memory stick or something to download the info then print it out.don't worry,go for it I say,who the fucks going to enforce a £5000 fine?

At this late stage printing at the start and finish would be the only option, at least if you are stopped you can prove your start time.
Has the other driver got a card, for his benefit not yours.

If your picking it up the hire company may request your card and photo copy it along with your licence,
Dont they have any older motors that have an analogue tacho fitted >56 plate will still be on analogue more than likely
then just use a chart and take a spare

Completely illegal and a very serious offence if you get stopped mate.
I left my card at home and had to go back and get it, there are no circumstances under which you can drive without it unless it is lost, stolen or damaged, you then have to do a print out for your records.
When i applied for my card, i wasn't allowed to drive a digi tacho equipped vehicle until it had arrived.
If you get caught, the fine will be huge, the points will be large and they will impound the vehicle.
The transport manager at the company that hired it will be in massive trouble as well.
Sorry fella, all bad news.
Don't drive it, worst case scenario is horrible.
Much the same as has been previously posted but here are the rules that affect you...
Can I drive without a Digital Tachograph Card inserted?
Your Digital Tachograph must be inserted at the begining of every shift, the only exception to this is if the card is Lost, Stolen or Defective.
If you have never previously applied for a Digicard you can not, under any circumstances, drive a vehicle with a Digital tachograph fitted.

dont know about private use but for work we have to keep the last 28 days tacho's with you in the truck(a max of 40) or if you havent drive in the last 28 days you have to have a diary of work hours and break times. if you havent you can be fined. sorry to put a spanner in the works but the driving laws have change a lot over the last few years.

Jay, ideally you need to find someone else to drive the truck sadly. I'm sure for a suitable amount of pennies someone will run it down to London for you
I'd offer to do it, but I'm in Somerset, so I'd need a way of getting to you first, and then getting back from London to home early hours of Monday morning... v difficult, but not entirely impossible if someone wants to cover my costs

other driver is trunking back and to collecting booths from huddersfield and bringing to london for me to drop off......
its a big contract and a lot of money by sounds of it and amount of people involved in the shop refits..47 booths!
hence it being VERY difficult for me to get out of now...

You can drive with no card if the digi-tacho has been applied for for 2 weeks
Have had plenty drivers at my work do this with the instruction from our transport manager
Keep a manual log on the old paper disc tacho's if you can get your hands on some and try to get the didgi-machine to give you a printout aswell
You are being honest at the end of the day which is far more than most of the drivers on the road

What he said mate. If you get caught your are going to have to pay a large fine, the courts do not like drivers who are even slightly dodgy about drivers hours etc. All it takes is a VOSA stop check fella.

But forgetting all about the tacho:
Unless you already have an HGV licence, you aren't allowed to drive the truck for hire or reward - I've just checked mine and although C1 entitlement is there, it has "Category restriction1 applies" - and on the back of the licence it says "not for hire/reward".
So you are worrying about breaking the tacho rules when you are planning to drive without a licence?

Absolute fucking bullshit, Tell your TM that he doesnt deserve his job for instructing his staff that, and the drivers need a serious word with themselves for not knowing the laws about their job.
