Just after some advice as we'll be getting the mrs a fourby sometime soon and I'll be looking for my self next year...
Partly to do with the weather but mostly because we have a dog and kids will be following sometime in the near future...
So far we've considered :
Landy disco
Landcruiser
shogun sport
Would like a range rover but I doubt we'll get anything decent for the budget
cheers

I'm a big LandRover fan but not the TD5 which is what would be in your price bracket! Google "diesel in oil TD5" to see why.
Having said that though, google anything and you'll find a million people whinging about how shit it is. Although, I've had one go under warranty and had to buy the fucking thing back but that's out of quite a few sold over the years. Just be careful! They also have the spazzy suspension.
X5s are popular on here and drive the best out of all 4x4s on the road imo.
Also consider the Rav-4, the Jeep Grand Cherokee [most available Dervs are Merc engines] or even the Ssangyong Rexton is quite a nice looking old bus.
Out of the ones you mentioned, I'd say the Landcruiser personally as they're pretty bomb proof, although they are absolutely shocking on fuel! But then, they weigh about 4 tonne![Surprised](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/bigcry.gif)
The Shogun is great if you tow your home or fairground ride

disco 3! i love mine,its a 54 plate TDV6 s
i bought it 2 yrs ago with 70000 miles on the clock, its got 95000 now,had a couple of faults,1 being the alternator.
if i had to name a problem it would be first gear being to long, can be very hard to pull away when starting from an uphill junction towing a car and trailer, low ratio gets you out of trouble but you have to switch it back again!the auto is meant to be excellent tho
wouldnt have anything else

might just get a disco 3 for ten grand ish, but i've noticed new shape range rovers are around for that price, saw a lovely looking one on ebay yesterday at 10250 buy it now on a 52 plate, silver, fsh 3.0td with 116k miles.
If i had 10k to spend i'd deffo be looking at l322 range rovers, or maybe a ml55, i know build quailty isn't quite what it should be but well worth a look imho.

What experience do you have with x5 insurance then? I find ours extremely reasonable!!! Do you really know or you just want to slag them off?

As much as I love driving them i don't like the bills. BEWARE is all I will say.
I'm currently flogging mine on the cheap as I've had to spend a bomb on it.

X5s are great for the snow, and all round general use, wife wouldnt be without it
Comfort and spec is great on them
Insurance is only £350 fully comp for both of us, so not bad either

definately land cruiser-awesome! newer shape shogun nice too,but i serviced one a few weeks ago that was a 2006 model and was badly rusty underneath, altough he does go off road with it.
was not a big fan of my bmw x5,not sure why but wouldnt have another.

X5 diesel all the way, drives like a car, faast (for what it is) and i am passing everyone else in the snow, not a problem at all in the snow, was pleasantly surprised when we got all the snow up here.....really surprised actually. Amazed at what it has handled with not a problem,

Another vote for the x5 camp, had mine 2 years and its been brilliant, 3.0d sport auto and even with 20" alloys its superb in the snow, we wouldnt be withhout it!

Clearly you havent met the wife lol....theres neeeeee way she'd be seen in a mini mpv !
Seriously though, she would probs have an mpv but since it's looking like we'll be getting this sort of weather on a regular basis every winter a soft roader seems the way forward !
Looks like the general oppinion is the x5...I've driven one and the only give away of it being a fourby is the height you sit at, really liked it !
For me personally though it would be a 4.2d Landcruiser, nissan patrol or a disco but all of those might be a tad large for her !
Thanks for all the advice so far people

Whats the mileage Dan? How long you had it?
What engines in yours? And how bad is it on the old go go juice?
My TT has been dead reliable (touch wood), its needed rear discs and pads and a front drop link in 2 years, total cost of 120 quid to diy fit.

i had a nightmare with mine aswel, lovley to drive but so many niggly problems. 52 plate diesel sport 80k miles with bmw history, all the toys with dvd headrest which the kids loved but and a big but auto gearbox problems, went back to the garage i bought it from twice after breaking down twice and seeing in on the back of an rac low loader, i sold it after the second breakdow, wing mirrors folding in intermittantly, front parking sensors needed new speaker unit, rear subframe bushes shot (common) front arm bushes replaiced, drivers door speaker wouldnt work, tried 2 of ebay but must have been an amplifier problem, strange whine under the bonnet when accelerating hard ( prob gearbox or turbo). was lovely to drive when working and felt really safe on the road

Thanks for the replys so far people ![Top](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/smile011.gif)
Showed the wife the x5 pics and she's sold on that so we're on the hunt !
That just leaves me and the mondeo....I've spoken to a man about a 2004 disco, it's the landmark so its got everything on it and a disco would be ideal for me as I do alot of motorway miles, the space would be handy and it'll be great driving accross muddy sites for work.
I know that the disco didnt have a locking centre diff for a period of time but they did re-instate it early 2004...Probs a daft question but how can I tell if the car has this feature as I would like it
Also, are there any major things I should look out for on these?
Cheers

Disco all the way! Mates got a tdv6 disco 3, it's very comfortable, loads of storage space, and does off-road brilliantly (much better than the other 'fake' 4x4's listed in this thread) He was trying to get it out of shape in the snow/ice, and it wasn't having any of it, no problems pulling away, turning or stopping. The best 4x4 out of the ones mentioned by far! It'll also happily cruise along at motorway speed, and pulls trailers on a regular basis.
