Mr2 mk2?easily under a grand for an earlier model, may get a 173bhp model, bombproof reliability,go for a rev2 or get the handling sorted on the earlier car and your onto a winner.tons of spares out there, not French, will be better to launch on the hillclimb due to the weight over the rear and look pretty good as well.
Don't rust much either.
You could perhaps squeeze a turbo into your budget but it could be a nail for that money.
Guy I know had a k plate one and he struggled to get £650 for it,t&t as well with not much wrong, only cosmetic stuff.

Here you go kid,I typed in mr2 up to £800 and it came up with 4 pages of them!!!there was a turbo just sold for £600 that needed a few jobs but I thought this looked good?

Can't really go wrong at that price.being jap, they come with loads of leccy goodies you could strip out to save weight and I believe that engine is pretty tuneable.
EDIT: just thought,about the 2.0l capacity,try a mk1 mr2 instead maybe,1.6 16v and very tuneable.

Puma could be a good choice. Cheap to buy, and quite pokey. Good chassis too.
Outside that, as someone said above; look at the class you'll be in, look at the cars that are winning events in that class, and go for one of them.
If you're going up against 106s etc, I wouldn't be looking at a ZX or anything like that. Yes you can strip it out, but the 106s will always be lighter than you, so you're at a disadvantage. I'd want the lightest car I could possibly be running safely. A 1.06 GTI/Saxo VTS is probably a good choice. Can buy them cheap, they weight fuck all and parts are pretty cheap, not to mention plentiful.

puma is just a heavier fiesta isnt it? what advantage does it give over the fiesta that is sufficient to offset the weight?
anyway they are nowhere near a clio, even my bog standard 1.8 clio mk1 that owed me 500 quid when I first got it can wipe the floor with a puma, it dry humped neil from fast ford's puma around combe and it wasnt cause he wasnt trying either!

its a very differcult one, pumas are v bad even frp's. Mr2's are very twitchy to drive, 3sgte engines are expensive and can be unreliable, back ends come out and its hard to bring them bck in because of the weight, I Dont know as of yet what would be right, ive got till march anyway till events start.

Just buy the ZX Volcane. It already has a 2.0 16v with around 150+bhp, and handle fairly decent without weighing too much.
And they are cheap to buy.
A mate sold one a few months back for £1300, and it was in excellent condition. You'd be able to find them cheaper in good condition though

go for the zx and show what it can do, may as well, sounds like youve got alot of experience and parts for them
will you not need harnesses and a rollcage etc for the class your going in?
do you have to be a certain age to do hill climbing as you say you dont need a road license........?

i had a c20seh nova saloon and tbf i wouldnt have one again, due to the fact im not confortable in one and thesteering coloum position i dont like, or the fact they rust just about everywhere, but some c20xe' converted ones ( rare to find a decent one) do go well!
Jammers i think last time it was £80, you dont need to take a driving course either, just fill out a form, need to take a pisture of your self, need to say what category you want to apply for and sent it to the MSA, youl have a reply back qith in 2 weeks usually, Then you need to join a club who will send you information where sprints and hillclimbs are being held.
I wonder if i can do track days or santa pod with a Msa license
Here is info you need

it RR'd at something wank like 108bhp when at Mtec and had full interior, standard everything bar some tyres. It was shite!
You was stripped and caged, bigger discs.
Puma's are ok, mine was better in the end but was rotten as a pear. They get eaten big time.

My missus had one for a while and it was really fun in standard form, so I'm sure with a few tweeks it could be quite a capable little car.

A friend of mine bought a white 5 door with a k series lump. It was completely standard to look at and still had the steelies and wheel trims! Also was standard ride height and 1.1 pee shooter exhaust Went REALLY well but didn't like stopping or going round corners for some strange reason! He managed to upset a civic type r driver in a straight line with it lol!

More power than the Fiesta. 1.7 Puma is quicker than any Fiesta you'd get for the money. Revvy, willing and handle well, so worth a look for the money I think. Perhaps not the best car out there, but I think they're good for the money.

I'd go 1o6 or clio as mentioned. Both weak geatboxs tho
