3dr or escos. which is better?
as per title really. thinking of selling the 3dr and maybe changing for an escos. anybody's opinions and experiences will be greatly appreciated....but..................

Hmmm how could you choose! Both have their merits - both icons - RWD and nostalgia of the three door, but 4x4 of the Escort plus always seen as the 'best' Cosworth.
If I had the two in front of me with keys to both it would be a tough decision.
And AFAIK they didn't make any factory rwd Ecos'.
What are good Escort Cossies going for at the mo? As, for a change, I'd be tempted with an Evo X for that money.

well that didnt help me make my mind up!!!it is weird how they always show the escos as being the best cosworth. i have never driven one, so need really to see how i feel in one. hmmmmmmmm
this is hard. i love the 3dr, but just fancy a slight change you know!!

Personally, I've always liked the shape of the sapphire, plus they are more affordable (currently - decents ones are fetching silly money now too).
You can still get the arse end out on the 4x4's anway!

If you're not a Sapphire person, that makes it a bit easier - back to the original decision of 3-door or Escos if you've had 3-door go for an Escort for a change, go view and test drive, see what you think.

Had both escos & 3door, different in they own way but both fantastic motors.
The 3door was big bhp so much different to the escos which was a msd stage 3.
Still got the escos &( mechanic 28) on here has the 3door now but on the look for a good 3door at the right price!

Probs a stupid question, but why would you want to make a 4wd a 2wd? Would it just be for drifting? Or are there other benefits?

It's not just a matter of driving them either, because if you drove a standard Escort and compared it to a Stage III Sierra, you would be extremely disappointed with the performance (even though the Escort naturally drives like a much more modern car and feels a bit more special inside).
You need to realise that they will each have their own attributes, but a good Escort will run rings around a doggy 3dr and a good 3dr will run rings around a doggy Escort.
A 3dr feels more twitchy on the front end due to it's geometry set up, where an Escort feels glued to the road and more planted due to the fact that it is one of the first ever cars to have downforce at speed (rather than lift). However, the aero package has a downside in that the acceleration slows dramatically above 100mph compared to a Sapphire and the 4x4 transmission means that you need around 40bhp more for it to feel as fast as a 2wd to compensate for these losses.
So it's basically swings and roundabouts, and you just need to chose the car that appeals to you. However, if you're going to use the car all year round, then the 4wd comes into it's own, and it's only when you drive a car that hasn't got this in slippery conditions that you realise how much it helps.

Both are classic cars so either is a good bet.
The one thing to consider is Escorts are very cheap (for what they are) right now, give it a few years & they will go the same way as a Good 3dr or Saph etc. Most of the dogs are being broken & that leaves fewer examples that are being looked after correctly.

i agree with the part about the 3dr needing the 500 bits mike. thats the issue.... mine has all of these, which is making it a lot harder to decide. i dont think i would even entertain a escos without it being at least stage 3.

Having owned both i love them both, as said before its the more modern look and comfort of the escy, but the rawness and iconic presence of the 3 dr that makes it hard to decide, all depends on your driving style and what you want it for??

I've owned all... it's the 3dr that does it for me, but as Mike as said, my Escos was only running a Graham Goode 280 state of tune and after coming straight from a T34/ Greys Live map 3dr it felt slow as a MO-FO...
Martyn, you need to drive one bud and see, it may blow you away, drive Mikes you'll forget about your 3dr then..

Ive always wanted a 3dr cosworth! nearly bought an imperial blue escort cosworth a few years back but the insurance was brutal so opted for the focus rs! Ive had a standard 4wd saph cosworth and tbh it was a big letdown compared to the frs but im sure with a stg3 tune it would have put a smile on my face!
Between the 2 it would have to be a 3dr for me! i like the look of escort cosworths but being restricted to stg3 power because of the 4wd puts me off and i dont have 10k to spend on uprated transmission! moonstone 3dr all day for me
