Default End of an Era...

Max Power is no more!

It turned to utter shit in the last few years so it's not surprising. But part of me is still a little sad, not least because it was the magazine that made me want to write for car mags. I read the very first copy in WHsmiths and decided then and there that that was the career for me.

Do you think it might be possible to do a little rememberance page in the next issue of FF Dan? ...you could remind us of classic Maxy Poo catchphrases like: "On a mission..." "Mission aborted, gone for a smoke" "Lower than your grans nipples" "Oi copper, cruising is not a crime"

RIP.

Cheers,
Grant

Has it? I don't think it has at all. There's still massive shows throughout the summer like Trax, USC, etc etc to cater for that scene, so it seems to be going strong.

I used to read revs years ago. Used to be a bit more performance based, but then seemed to follow the same road as Max Power, featuring cars with big kits and things. Seemed odd really, as they were both made by the same publisher at the time, so it was trying to compete with itself!

RIP to MP if it's gone under really, been very influential to the modified car scene over the years really, and turned out some pretty impressive project cars back in the day. Perhaps not to everyone's taste, but all had some serious work put into them in places!

That's still going, owned by a guy on the RS2000 forum. There's been a couple of topics on here about it. That car has some properly nice bits on it.

It's still about. We put a pic of it on track (can't remember which one) recently. For all its faults in the last few years it was massively influential in the whole modified car scene.

I could be wrong, but think someone on here bought this car or knew someone that bought this car recently... hopefully there is a resto thread on it because IIRC there were some brilliant and very trick bits fitted to it.

I know someone who's been doing some work on it over the last couple of years for the guy who currently owns it. It's changed a bit now though. Was at Ford Fair this year too.

Custom bumpers have been replaced by standard ones at the moment. The centre exit system is gone, and so is the big audio system. It's now stripped out. It's had a lot of the braking system redone, as well as the suspension too.

Still has loads of nice bits though. Mountune engine is still there, with the F2 slide throttle bodies, has the F2 arch kit, chopped up WRC rear wing etc etc on there still. Even has a modified rear beam so runs Escort Cosworth rear hubs and brakes like the F2 cars did!

I did get a quick run out in it, it sounds sooooooooooooooooooo good!

i'd say it has a bit or maybe its just me i remember the days where body kits were every where and you would always here big systems pumping out of the local lads cars etc or maybe thats just me not noticing as much lol

Agreed. I think it's been a huge influence. Without it, I don't think I'd be into modified cars anywhere near as much.

Is it just poor sales that have done for it then?

It was an awesome mag back in the day, such a shame it went down hill. I entered the comp for Project Kicker, you had to guess where the keys were on the picture if you remember!!

One of the writers was called Hans, he was piss funny with his supposed quadruple turbo Fiat Uno thing!

Bloody hell. End of an era indeed. I bought the first copy of Revs when I was 11 years old, I remember the cover car was a silver mk1 golf GTI and you got a free keyring (which I still had til a couple of years a go) and condom holder and a sticker.

Back on topic. I used to buy Max Power back in the day (used to get it delivered from the newsagents!) from around 96 - 99. I think it probably struggled to shrug off the fibreglass and furious image in recent years. Think the last copy I bought was the 15th anniversary issue.

Yeah, the sales dwindled to the point where even we were outselling them. Fast Car (their main rival) moved with the times whereas Max carried on trying to flog a dying horse.

I started just as they'd finished the car. I seem to remember there being an uproar as it was a Harrier! Also the guy who won it kicked off because he couldn't get an MoT on it because of the hydraulic handbrake.

Amazing that one of the biggest selling magazines in the country (about 280K copies a month IIRC) can go down the pan totally in a relatively short space of time.

Was effectively the mag that paved the way for loaded and FHM etc rather than just a car magazine, and I guess that ultimately everything that was in max power is now available elsewhere to a better extent either in lads mags or proper car mags or free porn sites.

I think if 14 year old lads had access to whats on the internet now back 15 years ago max power never would have been the success it was!

As you say, love it or hate it (hate it by the end in my case) its certainly the end of an era and was a very important mag in lots of ways.

It was indeed a Harrier originally, a mega rough one at that, Revs got a company called " catch-it " motorsport to do all the work on it and it was rough as ! well I wasn't to know that until I had it blasted but that was the end of that car.

I didn't win it, or buy it off the winner, I think it was 3rd or more hand by that point, it was a long time ago now though !

It was also bent IIRC, the wheelbase was very different on each side, and I seem to recall there being a degree of nervousness in the office about giving the car away because it was a bit of a knacker!

Wires crossed slightly there Chip; FHM was about long before Max Power, in fact MP and Loaded were launched at the similar times, although MP was first.

MP didn't have women in it for a few years, by then FHM and Loaded were proper lads mags. The fact MP later out sold FHM and Loaded was impressive, though a lot of that relates to it being slightly more accessable to the average youth. I wrote my dissertation about lads mags at uni

Love it or hate it, MP was an iconic magazine, that (like Dan) sparked my interest in becoming a writer. Used to read it religously, and although it's been SHITE for ages, still a shame in some way.
