half the mag is full of ads dan, it's got more ads than anything else

but i'd still buy it as it appeals to me

i've probably also got around 6 or 7 years worth of max pwoer mags from day one sitting in the garage so if someone wants to make me an offer

I think if 14 year old lads had access to whats on the internet now back 15 years ago max power never would have been the success it was!

As you say, love it or hate it (hate it by the end in my case) its certainly the end of an era and was a very important mag in lots of ways.

Was the rs custard in your avatar in max power ? I remember seven valley built one that was in max power called custard and it was parked in my area. This is what got me into buying the magazine as it was a cover car.

I was going to title this post "end of an era" but truth be told, Max Power's era was over many years ago.

I remember walking into Martin's as a trainee mechanic and seeing the first ever issue, complete with free hat and keyring! It was a revelation and nailed exactly what I wanted to read about. I religiously bought every issue for about the next five-ish years - and I still have every early copy and every free gift! For many years, getting 'on the cover of Max' was the holy grail for most people (me included) and the mag was a true inspiration.

There was talk on this thread about VBH being a 'founder'. To my knowledge, Graham Steed was the main force behind creating Max Power. As far as I'm aware, he got a job at Fast Car and spent several months there suggesting it was aiming at the wrong crowd and should be targeted at the lads/boy racers. Fast Car disagreed, Graham left and took his idea to EMAP and the rest is history...

I joined Fast Car six months after Max was launched and despite Max Power matching FC for sales within six months of launch (unheard of for most new magazines), FC were convinced it would be a short fad. After 12 months, Max Power was selling double that of Fast Car - the once market leader! At that point the FC suits finally agreed that Max was more than a fad, but the damage was done and other mags would spend well over ten years chasing..!

I don't think there will ever be a magazine phenomenon like Max Power again - max just got it so right and the others (FC and CCC at the time) were getting it so wrong!.

Although I won't really miss it because like many, I've not bought it in many years, the first ten years of Max Power (and especially the first 3-4 years) had a huge influence on me and I've got a LOT to thank it for.

Hearing the news today doesn't really make me feel a sad, as face facts, it's been dogger for years, but it's a good chance to remember what was a once legendary mag.

I'm looking forward to Fast Ford closing too...

No seriously, I am!

I actually bought the 200mph Fast Ford the other day - was a great read despite the 'real life' 200mph run not happening and in spite of the editor's ultra-tight foreskin - which has baffled medical experts for years and is actually so tight it whistles when he pisses

I even bought Fast Car last week too. Thought it looked mint on the shelf in WHSmith Charing Cross, minimal cover lines and a great cover shot - I am a sucker for Porsches though.
Then the other day I noticed in it a different shop in its tacky-looking plastic bag with some free stickers... I wouldn't have given it a second look!

at the beginning it was also a monthly BIBLE for young people like me into modded cars. This was pre internet dont forget!

Not sad to see it go at all, but I will remember it very fondly.
This pretty much sums it up. I remember buying issue 1, "Throbbing Purple Monster" and then I also remember a Maestro Turbo, red with yellow detailing on the cover of what I think was issue 2. One of them came with a baseball cap, which there are pictures somewhere of me wearing! That was 1993! It was fantastic then, it really brought the scene into the 1990's. It soon turned way OTT and silly, but had a massive impact. Then it all fizzled out in the mid-00's. Then a couple of years back it reinvented itself as more serious and grown-up. It was actually quite good, although riddled with flaws. It didn't sell well so they hurriedly tried to turn it back to how it was, but by then the whole scene had moved on. It's not relevant any more, so it's died, but it certainly was once upon a time.

Before Max Power came along, I remember reading Street Machine! One of my last memories of that was an Anglia 105e group thrash in 1992! Can't remember much else tbh now!

so is it officially going to be the last issue then?

will they do rude things in it as a way of saying farewell or will they just stop doing it and not have a "next month" page?

wow is it really true ? max was ace back in the day when all you needed to to was stick some nice rims on, K&N and 4" back box and you was well away ha ha

think all the big daft kits, big subs and chavs made it a bit pants in the end to the point were all they was doing was spending a fortune but de-valuing the car !!!!

i never understood why they printed the ages of the sluts in the back of the mag, typically things like "age:15 favourite drink:breezer pink or brown:both: spit or swallow" etc

and some would get their tits out just to be in the mag, i wonder if that's a facebook blackmail type money maker.......

I once had to field a very awkward phone call.

Man "Can I draw your attention to page 82 of this month's magazine."
Me "Yup!"
Man "Can I also draw your attention to the girl showing her breasts at the top of the page"
Me "Yup!"
Man "She happens to be my daughter. She also happens to be 15!"
Me "Er... oops!"

Thats not quite true.

For Him magazine was around, but it didnt rebrand to be FHM until emap bought it in 1994, and guess what they already owned at that point? Max Power magazine.

Loaded was also launched in 1994.

Max power was the first "lads mag" in the context we know it as, ie a load of lads arsing about etc as far as I recall, although all 3 were in 1994 I thought MP was first.

Do you have a reason for that or are you just desperate for attention again?

I cant imagine I would ever be particarly happy any mag stopped selling as it doesnt effect me if I dont like a mag, cause I just dont buy it.
