Gotta be honest i was shocked when i read this topic......not because i like the mag (did buy it when i was 15/16 though) but because someone i know has very recently had their car featured in Max power and was banging on, on facebook how Max power was the biggest car mag in the uk etc etc and how well he'd done to get featured pmsl

I bought that one aswell!! Wasnt it tearing up tarmac with the front spoiler or something?

Anyway max power, feel a little sad, it was the first magazine that I used to get every month, and did do for some years! Then moved on. As said I think they took a gamble and went in the direction of massive bodykits and trailer queen cars. Wasnt for me so never bought one again!

Emma Bradshaw. She interviewed me for a job on Max and asked me if I wanted the job so much I'd get my cock out! She also asked if I'd let the editorial assistant (who was a woman) sit on my face!

I didn't get the job...

I think I still have a copy of the first edition, had a purple car on the cover? tried flogging it on ebay a few years ago, but got no takers, maybe it will be worth more now........

Did Max power's sales success help kill off CCC and help turn Fasc Car mag into a clone of MP? How ironic would that be

Was a huge phenomenon and not just a magazine....

I cant think of a specailist magazine thats had such a massive impact of society.

at the beginning it was also a monthly BIBLE for young people like me into modded cars. This was pre internet dont forget!

Not sad to see it go at all, but I will remember it very fondly.

Fuck they had some minging birds in there at times Always a good read though

Interesting how so many people slate it, I wonder if the tuning industry would be so big, or this site would have so many members if it wasn't for magazines such as Max Power selling the modifying scene on a global scale?

It was certainly an acquired taste, and not for everyone, but as a successful business venture, it certainly did the business for quite a while.

Agreed.

Even more recently, the staff were still getting interviewed on tv for Top Gear and things when talking about the modifying scene.

I think it had a big impact, and Redline, Revs, Fast Car etc wouldn't exist without it. They must have been doing something right if other publishers were trying to get a piece of the profits.

Not quite sure where the irony is, but yes that's kind of what happened. Max captured the spirit of the times and forced other car mags to compete or die.

They utterly lost direction in the last few years and their desperate attempts to get back to the glory days only made it worse for them. The more they tried, the more sales they lost.

Well, irony for me, as I thought CCC was a very good mag, but it was maybe too technical based for the time and did'nt change, hence why it died, but the mag that toppled it has also died due to not changing or changing too much....

PPC mag has sort of replaced CCC, thank god

They were definitely doing something right and shaped large portions of both the modified scene and the car magazine market. Max and Revs were made by the same publishers Emap, (which became Bauer). Revs was badly managed as they tried to get it to hang on to the coat tails of Max. This was a stupid idea as it diluted Revs' home-grown, hands-on appeal and in doing so and they lost their USP, and ended up a slightly odd Max clone. Even Performance Car (which was Emap) was redesigned to be more Max like and that utterly killed it. But from the ashes sprang Evo, so you've got Max to thank for that too!

Fast Car came out well before Max, but quickly switched its game to chase Max's sales by including cruises and all that stuff. For many years it was the underdog, but Future has a much better grasp of how to create specialist mags and while FC has gone on to weather the 'chav storm' and come out the other side with strong sales Max just lost the plot and no longer seemed to know what was actually happening in the real world.

Once upon a time they could dictate to the world what the modified car scene was all about, but they never seemed to realise that that wasn't the case any longer and hence (IMHO) it died.

Times are changing, the internet is replacing magazines. For example, you can read about Luca's Fiesta in the mag or you can come on here and read the whole story from start to finish, see the pictures and talk to the fella himself.

I only buy one car mag these days compared to half a dozen about 10 years ago.

CCC had tiny sales figures, and was never going to be a big seller as it was so track based and so niche. It also had a very small advertising market and just because uneconomically viable. PPC is in danger of that too as it sells in very small numbers, and there are very few ads.
