Pug 106 GTi - any good?
Got one as an mot failure to fix and sell on but thinkin of keeping it for the winter as always fancied one!
Anything to watch for? Rear axle is fine, and only failed mot on a tyre, brake pipe and wee bit welding. Its done 90k and is as standard as the day it left the factory.
Cheers

Great little cars. I had one for 2 years, pretty trouble free fun motoring.
Sounds abit obvious but they are small!-the pedals are v close together-cant drive it in riggers.lol
Sunroofs - they leak
suspension - rattles, rear axle pivots
driveshafts - if its lowered expect to be replacing often
gearlinkage - can get sloppy
Sounds like alot, but you learn to love em - just like old Fords. There abit soft but treat it well and you'l have fun.

Fantastic little car, nimble, quick, simple ish. Major points as mentioned already are rear beam, floorpan (double skin section where people mistakenly jack them up on), boot floor either side where it meets the innner arch, rear seatbelt top mount are behind plastic panel, electrics and gearbox+linkages, front drop links and anti roll bar bushes.
Bit thirsty as well for a 1.6 16v but okay if your steady away really.

I wouldn't buy one but young drivers love this sort of car
My Mrs has a 1.1 and has had engine running problems since more or less day 1 and she's owned it 7 years. I've replaced every engine sensor, etc and still has a hunting problem
My grandad has had nothing but grief with his 1.1 as well and it don't help me giving out all this free, stressful labour

cool cheers for all info.
Not been underneath to do welding yet but sure the fail sheet said near subframe mounting if that means anything?
Its just one of the cars i've always kinda fancied - my mate had one with a 4 branch and filter and it sounded wild!

My 106 Quiksilver is nudging 120k now, been fine up to around 100k with little cost, just the odd ball joint and other suspension components here and there. But since then its just been problem after problem. Rear beam went (common problem as you've already mentioned) driveshafts, clutch, gearbox, headgasket?, sunroof leak, overheating (probably due to/cause of HG), other suspension knocks, starter motor, brake caliper. Im sure theres more but can't think off hand. This has all been in the past 6 months, fed up with fixing it now so its going to get broken for parts.
Not trying to put you off, the first 4 years of ownership were great, great fun to drive especially with a decent set of springs and dampers and a vtr rear beam, fairly cheap insurance etc, even the lower spec models are good fun, just be wary that they can start to get expensive and a pain to constantly fix after 100k miles.
Oh and from recent experience the clutch cables can be a bitch of a job to replace!

hmmm! i had a saxo vtr before i got my focus and i was a member of the saxo ports club! plz dnt laugh!
pedals are very close together.
ma gearbox doesnt put up with abuse very well.
headgaskets are prone for going on both the 16v and the 8v ( they usually go by leaking near the cambelt cover and oil in the water).
my saxo used to eat front susspension ie linkrods shockers.
if its been lowered you dont want it lower the 30mm from standard and the rear beam should have had new seals on when the done it otherwise water slt destroys the bearings.
and any lower then 30mm will destroy the bearings as well.
rust in the boot near the wheel arches.
rust in the floorpan jacking points.
rust in both front inner wings.
lambda sensor faults can be commen.
steering track rod ends seize often and are a complete nightmare!
and ignition switch fault that looses the vehicles power steering and heated rear window is common.
electric power steering pump faluire is also very common.
would i have another? no! it as the car i always promised myself but it was a nightmare mine had all those problems and it rusted at an alarming rate.
my old collogue offred me his p reg cammed vts the other day for a grand and i declined!
they are too fragile! hope this helps tony!

i'm running a saxo vts as a runabout the now, proper chav-mobile but its fairly nippy. basically the same car as the 106. rot box though as said. couldn't get it sold thats why i kept it. not the most comfortable thing but will do the job. might have to break it to get rid.
