Tuning an S1 RST that is running NOS
Morning peeps...
Will want to get the car tuned again in the next month or so, but i'm running gas this time + a MUCH bigger intercooler, etc
I'll be runnign 25bhp jets to start with and then ease in the 50bhp jets.
Is there much that a tuner can do with the S1 in regards tuning it with the NOS!?!?!
Also wandering where the best place to go is for RST tuning?!?! I'm in and around the Bedfordshire area but travelling isn't going to be MUCH of a problem!!!
any recommendations?!?!
been recomemmend JAMSPORT which is quite close to me but have never been there....they any good?!?!

same again I spose
Karl's done ollies with gas I am sure, APT maybe (have to speak to Gary), Sure Jamsport have done RST and gas so options are open in every avenue

Nitrous and a rolling road isnt a good combination, you get a lot of heat build up if you dont let the engine accelerate, so holding it in place to map it isnt a good plan.
With 50bhp on a rs turbo you will drop the intake temp enough that you dont have to worry about the timing, in fact potentially you could actually advance it a degree or two when the gas is on, but personally i would just leave it exactly as it is off gas in order to keep it nice and safe if its a road car.
Make sure you test the fuel pump is up to the job of flowing the extra 50bhp worth of fuel.
The first thing to stop you gettign decent results will probably be the ignition side of things i suspect, nitrous makes the charge harder for the spark to jump across.

I believe that the car already runs about 200bhp (not sure)
50bhp shouldn;t make any odds (jets) 'cos it will cool it down, adjustments obviously still need to be made
We know shonky cvh's are made of jelly and ice cream LOL

the car is running 200bhp, now with new intercooler!!!
it has a GROUP A COIL so hopefully this will be up to the job!!
the fuel pump was also a worry of mine, so if need be, will upgrade this!!!

just out of interest, apart from the first inital setting up process with the 25bhp jets to find the ratio, should i just put the 50bhp jets in staright after and set the car up on these and not worry about running the smaller 25bhp jets?!?!?!?
not sure!! blowing the engine has always been a slight 'worry' of mine!!

I would take it Frankenstein Motorsport (Leighton Buzzard), mainly because they are mates and second because they set mine up with the gas before and it ran very well. They have more experiance with nitrous then most and have recently done my mates Nova with a 125bhp shot on progressive controller, that thing flies ..You might have to fine tune your jet sizes to get a better mixture as normally they are too rich to be on the safe side.
Definately go for the 50 jets
Which brand of nitrous kit did you go for?

Test the pump and find out.
Very non scientific but extremely reliable way of doing this is the coke bottle test.
Disconnect the wiring for the nitrous solenoid so that its only the fuel one working.
Put the fuel pipe so its poking into an empty coke bottle, using the 25bhp jet
Get the car into 5th gear, and full boost, so that its working the fuel pump as hard as possible.
flick the nitrous on for exactly 5 seconds
measure the amount of fuel in the bottle
Repeat the exercise on 50bhp jet, and if there is double the amount of fuel in the bottle then you know that the fuel pump is up to the job of flowing the extra fuel needed.
Repeat again on a 100bhp jet, to make sure there is a safety margin there, and if there is use your existing pump on the 50bhp jets, if there isnt then look at the pump wiring, its often not really up to the job, if thats all been done though then its bigger pump time.

thats right I wouldn't bother with the 25 jets at all, good idea in theory but I think your ignition system and pump should be more then up to the job, mine was fine and that had a standard pump with run of the mill plugs and leads. Nitrous rarely blows up engines, just make sure whoever fits/sets-up the kit knows what they are doing and you will be fine

chip - I don't suppose you know anyone south london/croydon way that do refills do you? Me annd about 3 other mates have kits but travel half way across the world just for a refill
Keith - Go onto the Wizards of Nos website, have a look on the board..some good info on there....www.noswizard.com

I got a wizards of NOS kit....
Been speaking to Ant @ wizards of nos for the last month now...VERY HELPFUL!!!
50bhp jets it is then!! may get a brand new fuel pump just to make sure its OK!!!
I'm running it with a MINMISER progressive controller....and yes, my main worry was that i wan't it setup PROPER!!!

Wizards of nos is certainly the make of kit you want to be using, the american stuff isnt a good idea if you are going for fairly large percentage increases in power.
Streetworkz in croydon used to be wizards of nos dealers but i heard that they were closing down recently so i dont know if they still are.
The noswizard.com bulletin board is down for a little while at the moment, but would normally be a good place to go for advice.
I really wouldnt take anything for granted with the pump just cause someone else's was fine, at the end of the day its all old now and so is the wiring, so its a lottery if its up to the job anymore or not.
Jetting it a little rich is a good idea, better to lose a few bhp than melt a piston!

Westy - Nick specialises in the ford side while Steve mainly does all the jap stuff, highly reccomend them mate. Good prices aswell and to be honest I am a bit biased as I consider them mates but go down and see for yourself. They won't let you down They are getting the rolling road uprated at the moment but also use a wide band for setting up on the road.
Chip - Got agree with you there sooner a tad rich then a tad lean

chip - care to explain more on that? Not disagreeing just wondered why as I know you know your nitrous
Westy - Mention you know mark from croydon they might give ya a discount

The problem is that on nitrous you have two sources of oxygen, the air and the nitrous.
The nitrous contains a much bigger percentage of oxygen than the air does.
This means of course that it contains a smaller % of nitrogen
Smaller % of nitrogen in = smaller percentage of nitrogen out
Smaller % of nitrogen in the exhaust means that it will look like it running richer than it is because it will look like there is more oxygen left % wise
So basically the figures just arent going to read how you expect them to, but the plugs still will.
Then there are other factors like the fact the nitrous may not have completely broken down in the engine prior to combustion or soon enough during, so not available as oxygen in the engine but then breaks down in the engine later in the cycle or even in the exhaust manifold with the heat and therefore appears to the wideband sensor as oxygen.
It just all becomes an overly complicated nightmare basically!

good read chip, never new that. Can you recommend anyone in the south who specialises in setting up cars with gas? Who done yours? Didn't you work for WON?
#21
I do all the tuning work on my cars myself (like actually do it not boschman style just talk about it, lol)
I dont work for WON, but i did used to help moderate their old forum, and i know them all very well up at doncaster, ive never needed to use anyone in the south though so dont know who to recomend.
TBH though, you really would be better going for DIY and learning a bit about it, unless you have a bottle heater it will keep needing rejetting with the temp changing anyway, so its not really a fit and forget thing like a chip or a turbo.
