There are reasons why they make laws on towing you know ! a fooking 406 towing a 3dr sierra on a twin axle trailer ?

WTF you doing on the road with that - I hate people who tow when they have not got a fooking clue about it - down right dangerous to yourself and other road users FFS do it right if your going to tow.

That peugeot cannot tow that much weight safely full stop.

Unlucky with the mapping though.

I'm sure you know by now but:

1. Move all the weight on the trailer as far to the front as possible and have the engine of the car you are towing at the front of the trailer.
2. When it wobbles, slow down.

The advice you were given could have killed you and the car(s).

mate just text, said i owe him Ł250 for the damage to the trailer. its bent the chassis a bit where the jockey wheel hit the rear bumper of the car and bent it, its also bent the hitch shaft bit that moves to operate the brake and the rear light is cracked (but still works, i even repaired that on friday before i set off )

no shit shirlock

unfortuanatly i wasnt to know that the 406 (estate if it makes any odds) was not a very good idea to use as a tow vehicle. i have used it before, same car and trailer to take the 3dr to pro alloy & hayward and scott before, and it was fine... still live and learn!

i will not be using it to tow a big trailer with a car on it again!

saying "i wasnt to know that the 406 was not a very good idea to use as a tow vehicle" makes you a bit of an idiot to be honest.

as YOU are the driver it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to ensure both the trailer and tow vehicle are upto the job of towing. you should have found out before even borrowing the trailer!

also, when your trailer starts snaking you should NEVER just floor it for fuck sake! that just makes you go quicker and if you have an accident there will be greater forces involved and therefore you'll have a big accident instead of say a bump. what you should have done was GENTLY let off the throttle. if you do it sharply its as bad as jumping on the brakes and will make the trailer jack knife same as why you should never hit the brakes if the back end steps out!

my dad's toed for years including big caravans and i've toed tiny trailers to 1 tonne gliders where the trailer is 3 times the length of a focus hatch and we've never had problems because we've known what the fuck we were doing and ad checked tow cars were suitable before hand.

also something most seem to miss. check the condition of the fucking trailer before loading it up as there no point using a clapped out broken piece of shit to put your pide and joy on and olso check the tow car over as it gets hugely loaded up towing and tyre pressures need upping a bit at the back!

perhaps you should go on a towing course or something so you dont kill anyone.

rant over!

sorry to hear the mapping was cut short, hope its sorted soon and on the road. will be the best feeling in the world.

telling me that now is a bit like pissing in the wind really.

the peeps i borrowed the trailer off never told me that my car was no good, and they more about towing than i!

so yes, maybe i have been a bit ignorant with it. live and learn and all that. so wont be doing it again!

I think you just need to use a better trailer,i towed my mk1 escort all over the country for various jobs with a brian james trailer and it was a breeze
A good tow car is a must aswell,i used a old omega v6 estate,at least you made it there and back!

Back in the day it was accepted that accelerating when the shanking started was the better option than to slow down, obviously times change.

I've towed a sierra with a sierra and it's not much fun, but I've also used the same trailer to tow the same sierra with my mondeo and it was really quite fun and a relaxing experience, ut I simply followed the slowest thing on the road and didn't overtake, that's what's probably done you the first time, the air flow from theblorry has probably upset the balance of thebcar leading to the snaking.

You can get anti snake kits so that's an investment I'll be making if I need to tow on a regular basis but I think he's learnt his lesson and will be much more careful in the future, and considering his double lukcy escape, he'll not be wanting to have a 3 strikes and your out moment

Luke from EP rang a while ago to tell me some good news!

the sierra made 397bhp!
forgot to ask how many torques will find that out later

there were a few issues along the way , like it needs a swirl pot, new FPR and a few other bits doing. and also there is a really bad vibration from the rear diff area, so i will have to get it recovered home.

he said once all the issues are rectified to take it back down for an hour, as he says there should be another 50hp in there!

so there we go, home built motors FTW

big up to EP aswell, as one issue was the blanking bolt on the block had come loose and fell out, thus resulting in oil pissing out all over their rollers.

will hopefully get down tomoz or sat and get it recovered home...

Hopefully this may be received as useful and Ill not be labeled as being sad for pointing it out as others have already advised that the car/trailer weight combo was dangerous.
People may find this useful:

http://www.uktow.com/towing%20capacity.asp#tab1

There is nothing wrong using a 406 estate to tow, as long as you stay within its towing capacity (that includes the weight of the trailer).

Just thought Id try and post something useful up again. I do manage it sometimes.

It seemed perfectly in line with what everyone else had posted, and I knew the information existed as Ive used it myself in the past, thought It may be of use for anyone else towing a car around.

Everyone else posts up about it being dangerous, I help out by posting some figures people can use if they want, and Im the sad fuck for doing so?
