Anyone stream films to PS3?
I use ps3mediaserver to play my bluray backups etc to the ps3. Its wired via ethernet cable from my PC>sky router>PS3. It says Ive got a max estimated network speed of 85Mb/s. Thing is, on some 1080p films that rate goes up to 140+ and starts to stutter. What can I do, whats the actual issue? Is my pc not man enough, network card not the best or something else?

I would but some are 12gig plus, so much easier having a 1.5TB drive on the PC so can download to that then stream to PS3. Get a nice user friendly menu so kids just turn PS3 on and choose their film.
Dan, how would the gigabit switch work? would it replace the sky router altogether? Obviously at the moment both PC and ps3 use it for internet and im making use of the convenience of using it to allow data from pc>ps3.

Normal Windows OS is not great for streaming, as it wanders off and does other things from time to time.
Try a dedicated server, such as Windows Home server. You can get a beta copy of WHS2 at the moment to try, works very well.
Mines only a single core 2ghz celeron and copes fine with 1080p over a 100mb network.

Purchase a nice gigabit switch, some Cat5e network cables.
Plug the sky router into the switch, along with the PC and PS3. The PC and PS3 will be gigabit linked and you should see an improvement in speed between the two.

yeah, I started off with it wireless but started stuttering on 720p films. Put in the cat5 cable and its pretty much fine for everything upto 1080p, just certain films where theres shit loads changing on the screen Ive seen rates up to 140+ which it struggles with. I use ps3mediaserver, its piss easy to set up and better than TVersity that I was using. Whats the going rate for one of these gigabit switches then?

Your looking at about Ł40 for a switch
I use the 8port version of this

Worth a punt, or maybe go to PC World or the like and buy one, try it, and if not happy/doesn't improve, then take it back

What not just buy a bigger hard drive for the PS3 and copy them onto that ? I bunged a 320 gig in mine and AndyRST bunged a 640 in his for when I go round with my external hard drive.

tis an option but its just so easy at the moment, even the kids can do it. Having to copy stuff around etc seems like a chore when I can just download and go, sorry, backup and go.

does the PS3 still only support FAT32 filesystems and hence only have files smaller than 4Gb ?
This was the main problem I had with my old PS3, most HD movies I had were too big to fit on a removable disk.

thats all well and good but I cant trust my 7 year old to start plugging hard drives in. TVersity is a right ball ache when it comes to bluray films, having to tsmuxer them before hand and shit, with ps3mediaserver it does it on the fly. Having to add folders etc in tversity was always a pain too, with ps3 it updates every couple of seconds automatically, so much easier to use. The newer tveristy might have addressed them issues I dont know, i used it for a good 12 months and when I came across ps3mediaserver the difference was amazing. My main query was if its my pc that isnt man enough or if the network wasnt man enough which so far seems to have been answered

Righto i keep reading this thread and need an idiots guide please.
I've never made "back up" films yet and am about to delve into finding these back ups. If you have any suggestions please email me as i've never backed up before.
ALso i was going to use my ps3 to watch my back ups.. If anyone can explain what i need to play through the ps3 i'd be very grateful!
My 2 and 5 yr olds drive me nuts leaving dvd's out etc. I'd LOVE to be able to host it all on the ps3 or seperate comp and then stream to the ps3!
HELP!

I copy all files onto a USB stick for myself, son and brother and we all watch them on the PS3's. It's the easiest way I've found as you don't have any juddering, skipping, etc. Just takes a few minutes to copy onto the USB and plug in.
I'm pretty sure if you google this problem with mkv files (Blu Ray iirc) you should find a solution on how to stream them. If they are 1080p avi files then also google search this to find a solution.
As for Mac streaming to the PS3 you need something called "EyeConnect" which I use
