Default Lucky to be alive

I was heading to Stevenage up the A1(m) at lunch time today in the RS for a meeting (Don't usually use the RS for work but hadn't driven it for ages and wanted to stretch her legs). Just south of the Stevenage junction the driver side rear stub axle failed

I managed to coax the old girl onto the hard shoulder and await the AA. When they eventually arrived the guy managed to move the car just 6ft forwards and the wheel came off completely.

Fortunately I'm still here to tell the tale. I feel very very lucky

I don't know why it failed. I'm hoping Steve will be able to tell me more when I speak to him tomorrow. Brakes are standard drums and as far as I could tell it failed just before the threaded part of the axle.

Glad your OK mate, reminds me when my brake caliper came loose in town fell off and locked my wheel. Only 5 mins before I had been doing 80. Someone upstairs must have been looking after me that day

i'va had a few front hub nuts fail on me.. some crappy 'generic' bits i think...

first sign of it going was the brakes had mega travel!!!!!! cos the discs/wheel was that loose it was knocking the pads off!!

luckily didnt come off though.

the shoulder at the end by the threaded part will be the weakest bit of the stub, on a mk4 theyre set to arent they?

The bearing had been over tightened and got very hot causing it to snap in 2....(you could see the blueness on the shaft and bearing race from the heat)...

PS...

The other side is ok

Suffice to say the dry cleaning bill may be more than the cars repair bill
