Default Vivaro 19CDTI (06) - Changing power steering pump

Hi Guys,

Yes I dropped a right bollock and bought a 06 Vivaro 19CDTI (55,000k).
Been fine for about 6mnths until 3 weeks ago, had to have the slave cylinder done - what a job that turned out to be - gear box out the lot. Anyway, the power steering pump has now blew it's top, or rather the disk on the back of it resulting in all fluid being lost and no more power steering !! So I'm gonna do the pump myself and flog it. Has anyone done one ? Much of a job ? anything to look out for ?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, cheers.

Steve

P.S. Anybody want to buy a Vivaro ? New complete clutch and power steering pump, low mileage. lol

Not really a bad job to do you will find it alot easier if you take the drivers side headlamp out and intercooler off.if you have got a genuine vauxhall pump you will also need to press the pulley on as it's an interference fit but there is a measurement for the pulley to go on.but ifypu have a
new pulley just press it on while you have the old
One next to it so you can check it's right.

Mate of mine works for a company that has approx 5 vans, 2 of them being vivaros, they both broke down yesterday with the clutch slave cylinder failed! Is it really a gearbox out job? Thats going to be expensive!

yes, happened to vickers at j18 of the m4 lol.

geabox out, was done on warranty as there is a fault with them, but had to pay for the new clutch - Ł70 odd iirc.

is there anyway of making these shitboxes faster without spending owt?

mine, well, im sure i could run faster

Stevie, they are actually pretty good vans tbh. longer service intervals and usually pretty reliable from what i gather.

just had the orginal continental tyres changed on the front to some dunlop effort, fucking useless now on the bends tho lol. luckily i had to have those and not the budgets my company usually fit, else id have crashed by now

A friend has one, but he bought brand new and it only sees light use.

if I was buying one it would be very second hand, and see high miles.

I cant afford to buy a liability ! Think I'll stick with small van stuff for now

well, i got mine on 20k, its now done just over 30k miles in 3 odd months. its had its 20k service at about 22k and a set of tyres last week on the front.

service is every 20k miles.

my mates has just had rear discs and pads, and is due front discs and pads right now, but i dont know the milage. im getting 550 miles to tank, and thats flat out pretty much of the time, although working in london the last 2 weeks ive only seen 450 miles to tank!

ok, ive only done 10k miles in it, but its better than the old dispatch i had, although not as fast!

The power steering pump was also done on mine as a recall/warranty the guy told me, when it went for a service one day,..
Slave cylinders are right pricks though, as it's the release bearing swell, so yes, gearbox off.. This was also done under warranty a few months back on my 07 plate vivaro

Yep, a full days graft. So I renewed the clutch as well while the box was off.
Ł500 incl parts - that was a mate doing it - god knows what it would cost at a garage - Ł75 ph ?

Just a quick update that might be of interest to anyone contemplating doing this.

Took old pump off this morning and found the easiest way was as follows -

Remove trim below headlights - no real need to remove headlight.
Remove indicators.
Remove bumper and plastic trims/covers below wheel arch and at side of radiator.
Disconnect 2 x pipes on pump.
Wind belt tensioner back (there a hex head to do this).
Remove 3 x 13mm bolts from pump.
Remove pump.

There was no inter-cooler in the way and once bumper and plastic trims are out of the way getting at the pump is easy. Took around an hour.

Picking new pump and pulley up today and imagine fitting is reversal of above plus refill with fluid, if there's anything else to do I'll post here.

Your right it is an old thread - since I did the pump I've sold the van and moved to Australia ! The internet is a great thing.
Anyway if you are talking about the pulley wheel on the end of the pump, the new pump I fitted had one on it so didn't need to change it. If you've got to change that you will need a puller I would imagine as it's probably been pressed on.
Hope this helps.

we had to wait 3 weeks for one to be done at the dealer

then it went back a few days later as they'd spilt fluid onto the alternator which fucked that too

they are shite vans though and vauxhall only last month decided that the 10 plate vans could go for a service every 18k, the later ones could wait 20k between services and the 62 plater's could now wait 25k between services, even though the spanner comes on WAY WAY before those intervals the dealers just turn them off as the lease company won't let them service them before those service intervals

we have one with 700 miles on it that has broken the window winder handle, they all rattle like fuck but they do give very good economy which is why we've got 180 of the fuckers

the seats collapse on them regulalry as all that getting in and out pulls the foam away from the back of the seat, the door handles fall apart after about 50k on the side sliding doors, virtually every van we've had has had this problem, the locking system for the sapre wheel carrier is a nightmare, the location of the power socket gets in the way every time you change gear and some of them tend to get pulled out of the dash board, the seating position is shite, the instruments look terrible, expect to take your time figuring out how to change the time on the clock, the headlight beam adjusters have been put by your ankles, changing the headlight bulbs is a proper mission, the power sockets only work when the ignition is on, the central locking has played up on loads of ours where it lcoks/unlocks when you go over a bump and needs some software upgrade doing to fix the problem

i could go on but you can probably tell i'm not a fan

We have a pair of vivaros as courtesy vans. Clutches are a pain to do ! Not so much a shit job as fiddley & the box is damn heavy !!
As said, pas pump is no real biggie, common to pop the disc on the back though.

These vans are ace and make me a killing, power pumps like you say but more than anything the gearboxs go wrong all the time, they loose the selector inside the box due to not getting enough splash gear oil on them, box of on these we always take the front end off ! simples

I specialise in these vans. Theyre great if looked after. But not really strong enough for their intended use unfort.

Andy escos - get them to check the steering coupling / union, from the steering wheel to rack. These are common for creating problems at low revs. Many people overlook it and condemn the rack first

i actually rate these vans as i have owned a couple and work on plenty if you ignore the service interval and service them every 10k tops they last a hell of a lot longer, gearboxes are not that bad ive done worse! and i find the selectors actually go from water ingress into the box through the breather at the top, the scuttle panel leaks onto them, 5 minutes spent making a shield for the top of the box helps prevent it

I've had mine 4 years and its due for renewal any time now. I can't bloody wait its been nothing but hassle, has spent so much time in the garage with window, handles breaking, clutch issues, power steering pump( which I had to wait 5 weeks for) ball joints its had loads of them. But then I am using it as a van and it does catty some weight daily..
I am having a vw transporter next and ooh am excited..

Can only speak from the experience I had with mine before selling it on.

Great when it was running ok but a nightmare when it wasn't - clutch, power steering pump and turbo all went tits up on mine and cost me a lot of money.

Weak as piss in my opinion and not robust enough for a work van - ok to lease but I wouldn't buy another - not that they have them down here in OZ.

Glad you got it sorted

Oh by the way - the pump I changed blew up about 4 months after I changed it got a replacement on the warranty as it was a new one but had to do the job all over again !!

I've had a Vivaro for my work van since it was new in '08 and to be honest, it's been a pretty good work horse!

Sure it's had a couple of issues but anything can!

It's clicked over to 104k miles last night and it's still going strong, it's comfortable to drive, drives nicely etc.....

I'd rather have one of these over a transit, from '07 plate onwards anyway!

And Dojj, headlight bulbs are easy to change!!
