Default Underside Restoration Costs?

I know this is going to depend on the condition of the car to start with, but if we try and work on the basis that it would need a bit of welding and a general re-fresh and tidy up... what sort of ballpark costs are there likely to be on something like a S1 or S2 RS Turbo??

I'm looking to get hold of something which would hold my attention, that I could work away on as a hobby and build up bit by bit over time. Just seeing if its possible to do an underside resto without it costing the earth as I'm not keen on sinking lots of cash into an old car.

Cheers,
Grant

We charge from 400 going into thousands, it all depends on whats involved every car is different, also depends on finish, paint, powder coating stripping and fitting poly bushing welding etc etc, it can get silly, or just a clean and treatment.

Yea I'm not talking about anything remotely mental and running into thousands. I'm imagining a clean up, bit of paint, some replacement bits for bits which are shagged and jobs a good'un... I don't want anything spectacularly concours with anal searching for original Ford bolts and washers or anything like that... just thought it'd be nice to end up with the car having a clean and painted underside.

If you got mates or can weld yourself its only really supplies you need there so say Ł30
Grinder if you don't have one from B&Q is Ł15
Twisted knot wire wheels from machine mart are about Ł5-7 each and i think i used 4 of these.
I used POR-15 treatment and then 3M Bag sealer on my own resto.
About Ł68 for the POR-15 3 stage system from www.holden.co.uk
3M bag sealer is about Ł10 a bag from any 3M stockist, I used 20 bags but i went way over the top and think you could get away with 10, however you will need a compressor for this and the special gun to apply (cant remember the cost of gun but was not OTT)
Another option would be normal stone chip but unsure of cost on that.
Paint, thinners, activator, scotch pads and panel wipe etc i think come in at about Ł80
Spray gun was Ł35, this and paint etc from Jawels

If you go the powder coating route obviously the cost will increase, think once i have finished i will be upto about Ł400-450 on powder coating but if you keep the colours simple it will be cheaper (this is on a Sierra though and not sure on parts for Escorts so again may be cheaper)

Hope this is of some help

Grant what you really want is someones old saff cossie that you can slowly build up over time. If you found the right one i'd bet the current owner would help you finance it. He'll more than likely have a stack of bits available too

You hands on with cars and handy enough with a spanner?

Haha yea I'm not too bad with tools and have a few friends who would be up for giving me a hand too. ...I was more looking for something that I can work away on when time/funds allow over the next 18 months while I'm not out and about on the queens highway. It wouldn't stop the car being MOT'd (which I understand is the main aim with the Saph cause of the plate..) but I couldn't do anything or promise that it would be done soon mate.

Grant
