Default Oil Breathers and Height

Iv got Luca's old Pro Alloy breather tank which im looking to fit on top of my Corsa's chassis leg infront of the turret. This will position the breather below the outputs on the cylinder head.

Does this matter at all and will make it make much difference to the breathers efficiency?

Thanks

i put mine next to the turret tower on a mk3 fiesta so the cam cover breather hose is slightly below the top of the tank (so tank is slightly higher), so if any oil from the cam breather could return to the head(which to be fair there is not alot) it just stops the oil from entering the tank and dripping out of the bottom port on hard driving, unless your running a catch tank then you could run it lower but it means extra piping and a extra tank and emptying some times.

cheers paul

This tank does have an drain port on the bottom corner.

On the above picture off Ians website the camcover breather wich normally goes back to the sump is blanked off and the block seems to be breathing from where the camcover would be linked to upwards.

Could I do this but stil use the outlet from the camcover to my breather, but then use the the bit on the block as a return for the tank, or should I breathe from here also and use a manual drain on the tank. I have the option to do either with my breather?

Thanks

Why not use a drain back to sump, could even be from the drain plug acting as a return from the breather tank, and use any other pipes existing engine above oil level as breathers.

I 2nd that. That's why you have that port at the bottom of the breather, to use as an oil return. Just set up like you would on a Cossie engine, simples...

heres my tank mate , the -10 jic fitting to the cam cover and the 2 -12 jic fittings go to the 2 breather connections on the engine block , the bottom ports , 1 is a return drain to the sump and the other is a vent to atmosphere or it can be fitted to a catch tank , i remember when i cleaned it that it had different tube baffles running inside and that there was a certain way the bottom ports where used for ie 1 the return and the one for the vent

i know it aint the same but it may help you

that design has a major flaw - if you have the potential volume of breathable gases/vapours from the engine of the sum of 2x - 12 and 1 x - 10, yet you only have 1x - 12 releasing the pressure build up in the pot ?

Mark, so your saying that needs more outlets to help the engine breathe easier

hi mark , i know your very clued up on wrc cossie stuff and i certainly aint going to argue but bailey motorsport have been building 500+ bhp cossies in all sorts of race series and have been make tanks etc since the early 80s so i think if anyone knows there stuff it will be them , also i thrashed fook out of the engine hitting the limiter etc many times and only ever had very very slightly oil vapour in the outlet pipe with no signs of oil around the car , it also never breathed heavy under full load , it worked perfectly to be honest. even when i cleaned it there was hardly nothing inside

cheers paul

If it worked for you then it works simple as, though the theory of it is that you can not need all the inlets to the tanks if you dont need the outlets.

if you all you need is a 16mm outlet then you cannot be using the 16 and 20mm inlet to the tank at full capacity.

I see breathers either under-engineered or over engineered all the time. over is defo better than under though
