Default Cosworth Sapphire Intercooler Question

Im looking info on a standard cossie sapphire intercooler. Whats the difference between a 2wd one and a 4wd??

Are they both the same size and are they piped the same way?

Cheers

The 4x4 one is a direct replacement for the original 2wd one. The 4x4 one is about 25% bigger - it's taller and thicker. Unbolt the 2wd one and the 4x4 one will go straight in with no fuss. You MIGHT have to fettle the top of the radiator fan mounting flange on the radiator to make it fit though.

They're piped exactly the same way, however, the boost pipes are slightly shorter due to the 4x4 cooler's extra depth.

I'm certain the lower mounting between the intercooler and the top or rad is not in the right place, on a 2wd rad, I had to cut off the mounting ear from the rad that side and reweld about 2-3" further outwards, I know it was 22" centre to centre for the ears.

what about the radiators then? I take it the standard 2wd and 4wd differ slightly if the intercoolers do?

i need a new rad as well you see, so if i was for buyin the 4wd intercooler id be as well getting the correct radiator with it.

But if the only difference is the tabs on the top then its not a problem. I'll just buy whatever is cheapest.

If it's the standard Ford rad (which is perfectly adequate - just not very 'bling'), you can bend/cut a bit of one of the fan mounting flanges so the 4x4 cooler will fit.

I bought an Airtec alloy one (in sexy black), but couldn't bring myself to start hacking it up, so I put my 2wd cooler back on. Looking back, I could've shimmed the rad down about half an inch so I could keep the 4x4 cooler. Something for the weekend methinks...

It's worth getting new bolts and bushes if yours are a bit grizzly.
