need a van what to get

merc vans are rusty bastards aswell and worse imo
My work has a few of the new style sprinters and were only 6 months old and rusting
Would imagine the VW will be a pricey bastard to start with but look very nice and will hold its money like the old ones no doubt.
T4s are funny money with moon miles on them

VW all day long
I had a similer problem on what to get when i went van shopping
Sprinter or LT
The VW's were just better vans on every one i looked at. The Sprinters were either rotten or had dirty oily smoky Engines
Here's mine
Also have a T4 at our yard that we have had from new since 98 with just under 200k miles and still going well on the original everything. The only thing to watch on the VW is the Cam Belt so make sure its changed when its supossed to be done and when you do, change the Water pump while you are at it.
Other than that alls good

seeing that's a sprinter with vw badges and lights on, it's not really a fair comparison is it mate
if you are plumping for a new van then the vito makes the most sense
if you want to go bigger than the sprinter is a viable option but you have to take into account the size of the things, a vito will be able to take you into underground car parks the same as a transporter, but a sprinter will struggle to go through a maccy d's drive through, not just on the height, but the angle of the turns

Having a lot of experience with maintaining vans , I found that the LT engines where ok until something went wrong, then they were a pain in the arse. Problematic to fix and expensive because if you didn't do it 100% right, it'd break again.
The LT/Sprinter bodies rust like fuck given half a chance. So do Transits if the body work is damaged and not repaired properly. New Sprinters (and Crafters) are partially glued together and half of the roof joints internally are never actually attached to the roof (and if you lean against the roof panel they break away). The gaps between them seem too big for the glue to get a proper bond to both panels.
I personally would only buy one of the following vans...
Transit
Sprinter
Crafter
Transit Connect
Vito
The reason why I haven't listed the Transporter is from a maintenance point of view. If you don't intend to work on it and don't care about the price of parts and stuff then add it to your list.
IME the Transits drive the best, Crafters and Sprinters feel very big and heavy. Connects handle ace! Vitos drive well too. If you wanted the 200ps Transit though you'd have to get a 3.3 or a 3.5 tonner as they don't fit the big 3.2 litre 5 pot engine in anything other than rear wheel drive.
The reason why I haven't listed Renaults, Vauxhalls, Fiats, Citroens and Peugeots is because they are all shit. Drive reasonably well but by the fuck do they know how to break! And break often! The newer Citroens and Peugeots are a lot better though, and use the Transit engine which isn't a bad thing now they use Denso and Siemens engine management (the old Delphi stuff wasn't too good).
No vans are perfect and each has their own set of faults. As long as you chose from the list above I don't think you can go too far wrong.

New mercs rust like no other I've seen,I just can't understand why?only thing I noticed on the ml was the lack of seam sealer on the doors etc, hence maybe water ingressing that way?
Had a transporter last year as a courtesy and it went really well but was very thirsty, bit of a shit load height as well,it wouldn't fit as much in as my old smiley face transit but was comfy, good heaters etc,I liked it.

while searching the net a few months ago i found a ford dealer who was doing a transit sport, with all the kit, on a 59 plate, brand new, etc for less than £21k
all the kit as in navigation, air con, hill brake thing and all that jazz, plus the normal auto wipers, lights, reserving sensors, so that was a bit of good deal i thought

You need to research how heavy your caravan is and the gross train weights of the vans you're looking at, including all the people and weight you will be pulling at the same time as the caravan.

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
transporter sportline?
i know people with both and the vito is 207bhp i think and its an auto. can out accelerate an impreza mid range!
both nice vans the vw is nice inside though.
