You my young friend are FOOKED then.
Unless something changes in the next 2 years.
My bro is just 19 tomorrow and trying to insure a car is ridiculous at his age... so much more expensive in reality to when I was his age.

Cool first car, but i've just red a tread on here where someone did a insurance quote for a 998cc mk1 fiesta and it was £2272 iirc so good luck insuring an mk2 escort, I'd still get it but keep it untill you 18 or 21 by that time the value would have gonw up and you would have time to build a brilliant car.

my advice to you lad is do your college course on cars if thats what you want then as soon as you are qualified retrain in another trade, plumber, sparky etc... nearly every mechanic i know myself included regret becoming one as you are not appreciated massivley underpaid and the job is shit anyway.
i have 19 year old mates doing pipe fitting for james mercer who admit they do next to fuck all, all day and are pulling 22k a year and have guaranteed payrises several times a year
wheras im 27 been in the trade 12 years and im lucky if i get 18k a year if i didnt have my own workshop where i work at night for cash then i wouldnt be able to afford to survive allthough it does my head in having to work at night as it means im generally doing 15 hour days 6 days a week its crippled my social life but i really dont have a choice.
anyway rant over

Dont become a mechanic or less you can get to work on fleet vehicles. Ive been in the trade since 1995. I have hated it for years until i started working for royal mail. I try to keep there vans on the road. I love my job its well easy compared to working in a garage. As for the cars i would get some insurance quotes first.

Mk 2 would be class as a first car/project if you have the cash to do it properly as it will costs a fortune.
I didnt realise insurance has gone up so so much since i was 17 and it was expensive then.
Im glad i only pay £580 for a years insurance on my mondeo now and im 25

My mates boy was getting quotes of nigh on 3k for a 1.4 1998 renault clio... I mean WTF!!!
Youngsters ( especially young lads ) are getting screwed with car insurance to the point where many cant afford to insure their vehicles, and get their first step on the motoring ladder... out of order if you ask me.
I remember my first car was a 1981 Cortina 2.0L and that was only £800 to insure.. and when I was 18 I was insuring my Rs Turbo for around £400 due to a special offer.
Now Im 34, 8 years no claims, Pass Plus and it still costs me £400 to insure a 1.0 corsa... !!!! I was insuring my Escos for less PMSL
BTT.. MK2 Escort would be a cool car for a first motor, or a Mk1 fiesta.

thought he was a taxi driver.i was a plumber before i went offshore, self employed most weeks you can make 1k easy and have friday off.i gave it up as i dont stick anything for long but thinking of going back as my wifes expecting our 1st baby.if you can get a job offshore and dont mind being away then go down that route,or go train to be a mechanic or get a trade then you always have something to fall back on.
