wait for clarification it is zetec specific before thinking of getting one, if it isnt you could probably just buy a rotrex charger, rig up an FMIC and stuff yourself for cheaper. having had a zetec supercharged myself i know you cant just buy any old bits and slap them on, loads of stuff is in the way (especially on the silvertop).
The other key factor in deciding if an off the shelf kit is any use of course is if its transverse or longitudinal instalation that its intended for.
Zetec in a mk1 escort is very different to in a focus etc
Percy have you got a thread anyware about supercharging your zetec? im looking to supercharge my st170 engine at some point
cheers al
mine is the jackson racing kit from USA with the m45 blower, they did make the same kind of kit with the m62 for the SVT/ST170 which was much better powerwise and is a fairly straightforward "bolt-on" install but they dont make the kits any more. you often see them for sale second hand on ebay america and focaljet forums.
also there is the powerworks and procharger kits made for the (fwd) focus in america. they make more power than the jackson kits but are more in-depth to install and the engine probably wouldnt last as long if you were planning on keeping the car long term.
as Chip says, a rwd SC kit would be usually no good for a fwd installation, ford fwd zetec engine bays generally have fook all room in them!
Are the zetec and duratech not the same engine with a different inlet?
No the 'duratec' engines in the focus rs and st170 were glorified zetec's (belt driven) labelled up as duratecs. A proper duratec lump (as found in a fiesta) is a chain driven mazda lump.
i have seen a DIY mini eaton m45 with a custom inlet on a vauxhall redtop in a mk1 escort on turbosport, looked pretty good but you would need to either be very good at fabrication/welding to mount it, and for the bracketry and to do the idler pulleys etc (i have had probs with idlers on mine due to overspinning the blower). if you went to a fab shop and got them to make the bits for it all to fit, most places would charge a fair whack.
i had a heavy duty idler made for mine at a specialist place with decent bearings in it blah blah, wasnt cheap, and it only lasted a year or so then melted.
i doubt many of the DIY supercharger setups which people have done for Ł50 and held together with string last very long tbh.
percy what sort of top RPM does the bearing do on the idler pulley? Also was it the correct bearing as some bearings have a better chance if specced correctly.
