I got pulled in the same situation when they were doing checks with the DVLA. They checked on the database to confirm I had taxed it, sent me a letter of remand (a small telling off reminding me to display it etc) and sent me on my way. If you get a police officer on a bad day they can fine you for failure to display a valid tax disc Ł60-80 but it's not endorsable on your licence. Very, very unlikely though, I'd keep the receipt in the car.

They give you a few days grace anyway. Print off the receipt anyway just to be on the safe side but you will be fine driving it.

No.

You can only use the 5 day grace period after a previous tax disc has expired, as long as the initial application is made prior to the tax disc expiring. You cannot exercise the 5 day grace period for a vehicle which has been declared SORN.

"When you apply for a tax disc online or by using our phone service you are able to legally continue to drive your vehicle for up to 5 days after the tax disc has expired while you wait for the new tax disc to arrive. This will only apply when you have applied for a new tax disc before the current one expires. You should continue to display the expired disc on your vehicle, until the new one arrives."

I imagine though any PC worth his weight would exercise his discretion if it came to it, how the DVLA would deal with it, I have no idea.

Do you know when they brought this in?

I have been caught with failure to display, got a fixed Ł60 fine stuck on my windscreen and the next morning new tax disc through the door! Had only recently bought the car and taxed it as quickly as i could but there was a lasp of something like 2 days, even put a notice in the front window say'ing new tax disc in post, coppers misses obviously wasn't putting out the night before, stupid front bottom!

1st September 2008 is when the 5 day grace period came into effect. During the 5 day grace period you are required to display the 'expired' tax disc.

I don't understand why you would tax it online and not just go to the post office

if using a credit card for purchasing your tax disc then you have to do it on line or withdraw cash and pay the 30% or whatever it is interest rate!!

Though if you think we need the protection of the Consumer Credit Act for a transaction with Her Majesty's Government, we really are in the shit!

And if you need to withdraw cash from a card to pay for something you really are in dire straits, but if you don't pay the bill off in full every month the charges aren't that much better for purchases as opposed to cash advances.

if you think that the dvla dont make mistakes then you in a very comfy room with padding on the wall. ionce never received a tax disc ordered on line it took me three months to get it and they tryed not to reimburse me the months i didnt have the tax. and as for not paying a card of in full every month there are things called 0% deals

And have you tried using the CCA against the DVLA?

As for the cards and interest free deals, you will, I'm sure have noticed that they tend to have things called arrangement fees - typically 3% or more for 6 months interest free which works out to 6%+ for a 12 month deal.
