ive got a mk2 vr6, and the engine takes Abuse all day every day!! Just make sure you check the oil once every other week. The chains dont break easy, as they start to rattle way before they break, so youve got plenty of warning that they need changing. All in all its a very strong engine..

the vr6 engine is bullet proof if looked after it is the timing chain tensioners and guide rails that break and cause the chain to eventually snap !! if you listen to the engine at idle listen for any rattling for the gearbox end of the engine as this is where the chain is
the other thing that is a weak point is the clutch slave cylinders and clutch arms the clutch arm can crack causing a creaking noise when the clutch is depressed and the slaves can leak and go stiff to0
make sure you run the car up to temp and the fan kicks in and out as theses are another common problem along with the thermostat housing which warp and leak these are located on the cylinder head above the gearbox

check the sills very carefully as when jacked up poorly they are easily damaged and can cause corrossion in to the floor pan

just a few things to look for but very good car for the money and parts are reasonably priced too !!

Pistons 1 and 6 suffer bore wear on these engines. Mainly affects the 2.9 Corrado lumps, but does affect 2.8's too. Not sure why. Was common place on the VW forums over the last 10 years.
