Escort RST - T3 Turbo/Manifold Help needed
Having had my T3 reconditioned I'm now at the stage of bolting it back onto the exhaust manifold. I've got the four bolts pretty much as tight as I can but I can see daylight when I look through the join between the manifold and turbo!!! Is it that I need to do these bolts up tighter still or should there be some sort of gasket in there? Would this very slight gap between the two surfaces create a huge issue - I'm guessing it's not a good idea! Any help appreciated...

It's not a huge gap by any means - and you really have to look close to see the smallest of gaps! Just not sure if there should be a gasket in there or whether I need to get it done up tighter...

Be careful using exhaust paste before the turbo! If a piece breaks off and goes into the exhaust housing it can damage the turbine wheel.

nope no gasket, same as theres no gasket between the zorst elbow and turbo either...
Ben you night have to do what I did with my TT XR2, get the manifold mounting face bit skimmed so its dead flat, then it will seal perfectly

Thanks for the replys guys...
This seems like a good idea Wes - will give it a go.
Think the problem might stem from the fact that I've replaced the exhaust manifold, therefore it won't fit the turbo in exactly the same way as before.

Eh? Of course there is a gasket! It's either copper or stainles, multi layered. You can get one from Essex Turbochargers, cost a couple of quid. Whether Ford originally skimped on this or not, it certainly does exist.

Looks like I'm getting to the bottom of this now!
Just spoke to Essex Turbos who are sending me the gasket tomorrow! Only thing is I had to order three to meet their minimum delivery cost!
That's exactly what it looks like - you can just see the slightest of light through the two surfaces when they're joined - hopefully the gasket will sort this out.
Thanks again

If you look at the matting surfaces does it look like the manifold is out of shape or the Exhaust housing???
Thanks again

From factory there has not been a gasket. Ford neither sells one to my knowledge. I don't use one. But garrett for sure makes one and some people like to use one. It's 5e here from local truck spare parts (official garrett distributor). If you're surfaces are not 100% straight, I recommend skimming them straight. This can be done by hand too as the surface is not that big.
