IIRC the auto saphs were converted manual cars done buy a dealer not actually factory built cars anyway so should be simple to convert them back with the correct parts.

auto box is ok up to 250bhp fairly easily, as i believe the converted saphs used the gearbox from the granada 24v with a different bellhousing
would be quite good point to point i would imagine, as the turbo is constantly spinning up with the lack of lifting off for gear changes

20K+ Super Poster.
The BG35 is not a particularly strong box, it was chosen for it's cheapness, nothing more.
The cossie auto uses the std sierra auto box, ie the A4LD, which is a C3 with a 4th gear set added, it's a very problematic box as std, made much worse by FORD Europe not including the draughted air the box was designed with in mind, it simply runs way too hot.
In the us cars where this box was used they all used draughted air cooling as well as a better cooler, the o/d is particularly trouble some, the former C3(3 speed) was much stronger/better for performance, that said there is a 850 BHP cossie AUTOMATIC on the uk roads, and he does 1/4 mile stuff all the time, but not a A4LD.
The A4LD can be modded to effectively give it 2 direct lock up gears, 3+4, as well as convertor slip in 3+4.
I used to cook my foot on any long drive with my sierra auto, constantly had to adjust brake bands, as they wear and break so often, otherwise the freewheel function didn't work.
Got that hot I used to have to stop to cool my foot down, till I fitted the much needed winnebego air fluid cooler in front of main rad, was the size of the main rad, but jesus what a difference.
