Default No brake lights. Legal to drive or not?

Got no brake lights on my van so am I allowed to drive it knowing that fact?

This isn't a "should I drive it/how far can I drive it/will I get away with a didn't know officer" thread, I need the official legal answer, which I'm thinking is a definate no.

If it's on the car it should work (in an mot world) as they don't and you could cause an accident very easily,I'm sure you're correct in thinking NO you shouldn't be driving it,only to get it repaired I guess.

No you cannot drive it legally. All brake lights fitted to a vehicle must work. It's far too risky to try and drive it in case some one rams into the back of you.

It's the works van so the breakdown won't cover it as it's not a breakdown as the chicle can still be driven and as it's under lease they want it taken to ford which just leaves the question of how to get it there without "driving" it there. Need to speak to Ginge! to see if one of this bids can squeeze it in at the dealership....

i'm sure if its booked in somewhere to be repaired the law is slightly different so long as you take to nearest dealership

but normally legally its a big fat NO!!!!!!!!!!

If the lights are on the car they must work, if they are not you can mot it (day time MOT), as said. I wouldnt chance it though dojj.

They are now fixed I just wanted to know the score in regards to driving it to somewhere to get them fixed in the same way that you can take a car with no mot to test if it's just there and back. I wasn't about to drive it just in case something happened or ingot pulled over or something as knowing they didn't work isn't the same as them stopping working while I was out and about.

I think it comes down to common sense really. Legal or not, its just the fact that its rather dodgy and puts the safety of others at risk, so that should be enough to say no, I won't drive it on the road.

Has anyone forgotten that hand signals are still part of the highway code?

I have used many hand signals on a regular basis when driving but none of them seem to be shown in the high way code

Exactly, it exists for occasions when it might be needed, you are required by law to give an indication of your intention to slow down(or stop, turn), which you can do with the appropriate arm signal, I don't think you'd get in too much strife if you were only taking it for repair, depends on whether the copper likes you or not, in my case I'd be in the shit ha ha!!
