Don't get us wrong, the Welsh don't care at all about football, we're shit at it and we know it. Everyone does. But England have as much chance at lifting the cup as any celtic nation in the U.K. FACT!!! You have a team of all stars that cannot play as a team, you have a coach that's great, but none of the players can understand. You have a much larger country than ours, Ireland and Scotland and a hell of a lot more choice for players....so why can't you do well or better than we can???
I sit watching the game with a lot of my English friends, and the banter will always happen, which is all in good fun. Although the taunts you get from really ignorant people are not waranted, they are justified to some degree. We hate the whole hype and false hopes the team and nation gives itself. Then when the team innevitably fails, the whole "1966" and "at least we qualified" comes out as an instant defence.
We're not jealous nor are we cynical, we're realistic and face the fact that its better our team are known for being mediochre and cannot qualify, than having a whole nation overestimate the ability of a team, qualify (just about!!!!) and make a hash of it...AGAIN!

yes you can blame the footballers. its greed plain and simple.
it would take just one top flight footballer to say "No" and hold some kind of moral highground taking a fair wage only, to crash the football player money market. That would actually do the game a world of good as johnny foreigner wouldnt be happy so we'd have to use our own players for club games. again a good thing for the sport. also with dropped prices and lack of availability of foriegn stars, teams would a) have money to invest in home grown talent and b) have to choose english players as thats all thats available all year round.

Cheers, but just to clarify, I'm not against England doing well, I really would like to see them live up to the hype for once. But what I've posted above are the facts and I've not exactly made Wales' football attempts any justice so I'm not biased

As someone said before, if someone hates me just because of where I come from, then that is a reflection on them, not us. Just because England have had a few wars with France in the past, does that mean I should hate you? No I don't think so. I'd like to think I'm a bit above that mentality.
You're right, winning is winning. So, on that basis, England have won the World Cup in the past, which none of the other home nations have, which clearly means we have a better national side.
However, if you ignore that, and go on tournaments since that time; none of us have lifted the World Cup or European Championship trophies. On that basis then, success can only be measured on the amount of tournaments qualified for, and how far you have progressed through each tournament. England have clearly qualified for more, and progressed further generally speaking.
So, if you look at it in a sensible way (something people seem to be struggling with), then it is quite clear we do have the best national side of all the home nations. But, as said, we should have, as we have a very competitive football league, and a larger population to draw talent from, so it makes sense really, doesn't it?

I think the game against Slovenia did prove that we can play as a team, with Gerard and Rooney linking up well, as well as Defoe and Milner. The defence worked well together and I thought the whole team showed decent spirit. And yes, before the angry Scots get on my back, it wasn't an amazing performance, but given our truly shit start, it woud have been very easy to have another shit game and go crashing out. We didn't, we got the result that mattered, and we're through to the second round again. France couldn't get over their problems, and there's a media shit storm there, so it isn't just us. Germany lost a group game, and so did Spain, so we're not the only ones to struggle at times.
Yes, English football should be better, yes, we should be trying to grow more talent at home, yes, the media hype England up too much, and yes, maybe the fans get their hopes up too much.
But at the end of the day, it doesn't make any difference to the fact that a lot of people here are just bitter and twisted that we can get to that level and they can't

Personally, I think football is utterly utterly shite, and I wish the world cup would just fuck off. I'm sick of seeing and hearing about it everywhere I turn. FFS, even the Heinz adverts on the radio are citing the world cup
I'm also sick of the "patriotism" shown in this country. Soon as the world cup or euro cup comes along, everyone and their dog is an England fan - flags everywhere; cars, windows, doors, bunting, painted on bins etc etc.
But you don't see it for anything else do you? Not for tennis, rugby, golf, cricket, etc etc.
And funny that people say it's "showing our patriotism" when as soon as the WC is over and done with, it all comes down and you never see it again. Yet you go to America, for example, and you see the stars and stripes almost everywhere you look. Thats TRUE patriotism; people that are proud to be part of their country they show it all year round, not just when a sports tournament is on...

Soon as the England v Algeria game finished all I could see on Facebook were the English football "fans" saying how shit their national team was and that they are all overpaid cunts who can't play to save their lives, etc etc.

Personally, I think football is utterly utterly shite, and I wish the world cup would just fuck off. I'm sick of seeing and hearing about it everywhere I turn. FFS, even the Heinz adverts on the radio are citing the world cup
I'm also sick of the "patriotism" shown in this country. Soon as the world cup or euro cup comes along, everyone and their dog is an England fan - flags everywhere; cars, windows, doors, bunting, painted on bins etc etc.
But you don't see it for anything else do you? Not for tennis, rugby, golf, cricket, etc etc.
And funny that people say it's "showing our patriotism" when as soon as the WC is over and done with, it all comes down and you never see it again. Yet you go to America, for example, and you see the stars and stripes almost everywhere you look. Thats TRUE patriotism; people that are proud to be part of their country they show it all year round, not just when a sports tournament is on...

ok maybe hooliganism is not entirely an english phenomenom but again its probably like the english football team people are proud of it whether its good or not .

can you please tell me why you seem to take more pleasure in england
not doing well rather than your own team/country being succesfull
for example on the radio and other internet forums and facebook etc
today all i have heard is scottish,irish and welsh people saying how much
they wanted slovenia to win which i know is to be expected....
however now we have won and are through it is instantly about how the germans are
gonna smash us in the next round !!
and also i can only speak about my friends and myself but in the last euro championship
England didnt qualify i couldnt tell you who was in it and personally didnt give a fuck as England werent there i didnt go on about who was gonna beat who and it was the same at the world cup in USA when again we (England) didnt make it !!! i know Ireland did but i
didnt give two fucks how they did and i havent got a clue how they did get on !!!

England scrape through the group, the easiest group they could ever have gotten (remember the front page of the paper EASY) Now they are going on like England are going to win the world cup.
