my mate wanted to take his laptop in to watch films on while he was in and they said he could if he had it tested for electrical safety by an elecrition.

I was told similar by a nurse regarding my phone charger when I was in hospital this year. I just waited for her to leave, then plugged it back in. It will be PCT protocol on electrical safety and liabilities as above, but I doubt individual nurses/doctors are going to search for problems. A tv is more obvious as it is quite obviously powered from the mains constantly.
Ironically she was very concerned by my phone charger blowing the whole place up....meanwhile at 3am I was trying to buzz for a nurse and nothing happened. Turns out that somebody hadn't plugged in my emergency buzzer. Brilliant! Lol.
If I were you I would give them a ring and ask. If they have them for £3 a day all is well, and if you cannot have one then you won't have to lug it in to sit next to a blank screen.
im almost sure its contracted out...fookin rip off if ya ask me.
yeah this is exactly whats wrong with privatisation and healthcare!! if the profit went into healthcare rather than some fatcat company directors pocket then wed have much better healthcare!!
Business models of practice and efficiency great, but profits going out of the hospital is wrong IMO.
