no log book and need tax?
just brought myself a td mondeo but i'v gotta apply for a new log book as the bloke never got it off his mate when he sold it to him as a car just to tide him over till his works van arrives.
the only issue is the tax runs out the end of this month and i'm slightly worried it won't com through before then and can't risk i as i'll be commuting to and around london, is there anything i can do to either get the log book quickly or get tax without it whilst i wait for it to arrive.
cheer for any info

If your mates still insuring it and it's moted you could try taxing it online.other than that you need to get a letter from the registered keeper to say that he no longer owns the vehicle, this is called" disposing "of the vehicle.you can then apply for the logbook in the usual manner but as the vehicle is on their system as no registered keeper then you can tax it there at the local office.it may not be as simple as that for you due to your location as I live in Swansea and had to go to the old Dvla as we call it and then down to the local office to tax it.

go to the post office as i'm aware of and get a form to apply for a new one, unless you can do it from a dvla office that is, i did one once with an old escort i had and it was pretty simple, might cost you £25 it never did when i got a new one but this was time ago and i think they charge now.

i no there's an office in brum i think it's not a mate i've got it from it's an ebay buy, so unfortunatly can't get it that way, the bloke before me brought it from a work colluege (sp) and didn't apply for the logbook in the time he had it, guess it's a good thing as it only has 3 owners as per the hpi check, i'll find the dvla office and might give them a call in the week to see what they can come up with.
Bugger, could always forge the letter like I did!!oops!!

Applying for a log book usually takes 4 weeks at least so better to:
1.) Insure the car in your name
2.) Go to the dvla office in Garretts Green with your insurance certificate
3.) Fill in the v62 form
4.) Hand in the v62 form, along with the £25 fee and say you wa\nt to tax the car at the same time
5.) If the car is not in the trade, they might be a bit funny and say you can't tax it untill you receive the log book.
6.) Have a barmy at them, saying you bought the car, (show your receipt if need be) and you need tax. Just be adament (speak to the manager if need be)
pretty simple really but just time consuming

Sorry mr bubbles,do exactly what's said in the above post but as long you've got a letter from the registered keeper to say he no longer owns the vehicle yet cannot find the v5c for the car which will help in the local office as they do tend to be jobsworths!!!

I've done loads recently and they take approx 6 weeks, as someone mentioned they write to the previous owner saying that someone is applying for a log book and they have 14 odd days to contest it, if after the 14 days if dvla had no reply they issue a log book.

Another quick thought,is there really no way you could get in touch with the registered keeper to even get the green slip from him?I know it's a long shot but if you know his address then you could try typing it into the phonebook website and maybe get his number that way?

Fucked up system you have in the UK. When we buy a car here in holland we buy the car. Go to the post office with the papers get the name changed and its fixed.

Well its not worse then over there. But here the papers belong with the car. Don't have papers? You cant sell the car. Same as the nr plate. You cant change it. Thats it really. No way you can fuck someone over just by changing things. chassis nr is on the papers. When you buy a car from a dealer the plates come from the RDW. with the papers. Its easy as that.

just had this exact thing, the quickest way is most definately to do a change of address in the current owners name to your address then when it comes tax it with the green slip then off you go! this does work i got my v5 in 6 days and taxed it straight away
if you do not have the v5 dvla will ask the previous keeper if he minds then they ait 10 working days at least for a reply before processing yours ,
oh and if you go into the dvla office and have a barney they may be awkward and not help one bit.
cheers dave

Good point, get them(registered keeper) to apply for a new v5,they can do it over the phone and it's in their interests really as if you get any speeding tickets etc it could come back on them.true, you will get it asap that way.

naaa just tell them that the fine for none tax will go to them and you cant do anything about it lol they soon do all they can to help avoid the £60 - £100 like the owner of mine was very helpfull he even dropped £25 quid into me to pay for it lol
