E60 M5
I have the possible oppertunity to aquire an M5, however it has been in storage since around Jan 2007.
I will be viewing the car in the next week or so, which is on an 06 plate and HPi clear.
I am greatly concerned about the fact its been stood for so long. So, a couple of questions at the moment are buzzing round my head.
1. What should I offer?
2. What parts would likely need replacing on it. Tyres and brakes are the obvious ones, but are there any other parts which would not be enjoying its long holiday from the road?? Could the head gasket of perished in any way?
3. What precautions should I take before attempting to start it? I'm thinking of taking a lead off to crank the engine over a few times before actually firing it, to get it lubricated. Clearly I do not want to cause any damage it.
4. Anything else I should be considering?

drain the oil and change the filter, fill it with new fully synth...crank it over without firing to get oil pressure up, crank a bit longer once light goes out. fire it up...
to be extra cautious, take plugs out, drop a bit of oil down the bores and crank over by hand a few times before doing the above, but tbh it'll probably not need that...
H/G will be fine, brakes I imagine will be ok too unless its stored in a damp place.

All comes down to the price your paying for it and overall condition.
Go view it, if it looks the part and the price is right, get in about the engine with some oil, doesnt need to be mobil1, jus some cheap fully synth to get it going, then put some good oil in if you buy. talking Ł10 fo a filter I imagine and Ł15 for oil.

Milage unsure, but at the most it's been on the road from 1st march 2006 until December. Even at 2k a month it would have no more than 20k.
Not a certainty I can have by a long way, but it's worth a go.

Take jump pack with you just incase to help crank it over, dont worry spending a penny because you be only masking over any issue there may be.
It comes under condition based servicing not based on milage, goto dealer with vin and reg they tell you what service bulletins and recalls its had done. The E60 electronics were iffy when new so check every single item works as it should.

You can only use 10/60 on any M car.... it'll be 100 quid for oil dont dare put anything cheaper in. Awesome cars. As Porkie says just go drive it. It'll be fine i imagine. Ł900 for front discs, Ł200 for pads. Tyres arent cheap either.

Its an M. Just start it and drive it.
Do NOT follow advice on here about disconnecting things as certain items will put it straight into LOS and then it will intentionally run rough and need a specialist to reset its ECU.
Also, if you do buy it, dont fill it with cheap oil or the oil condition sensor will scare the life out of you as the algorythm requires 10w60 to operate correctly and even at that, it needs to be Castrol RS.
However, its a supercar and therefore, engine, brakes and suspension are its expensive points that need checking, so how you intend to check their condition without driving it is beyond me?!

I need to view then form an opinion from there.
I'm all ears for your advice, and thanks for everybody who has so far posted.
The cost of replacing parts will be offset against the price I can negotiate.
Stu I totally agree I do need to drive it.

06 silver car with grey leather. Only on the road for a manximum of ten months. In the pictures I have I cannot see any faults with the bodywork. Milage I will obtain when I view.
What is glasses bottom book price? I cannot see it having more than 20k on the clock, so I will presume that until I can proove otherwise.

As above just start & drive pmsl at taking the plugs out you would be there for a while its a job & a half. These cars sit about in dealerships ect all the time for long periods with no drama maybe a flat battery!
3 years just seems a long time, and the last thing I want to do is cause it any damage. I just want to see it back on the road, hopefully under my ownership. Such a waste of a beast just sat there.
as stu said, just start it up and drive it, if its got no tax or test then arrange with the seller to get it done on the agreement that you'll buy it on certain conditions being met.
dont mess about with oil etc and if your gonna spend 25k plus on it, then get a BMW specialist to go with you...a drink well spent

Fire a battery in it & away you go ! just let it run for a while without moving it & keep an eye on the oil indicator in the car! must be some sort of story with it tho how else would a car like that be left for as long! awesome cars btw you will love it
Carlo, what if it still has it's running in oil in? Unlikely I know but should the milage be showing less than 1200 miles, or BMW say it's not had it's first service, should I take any extra precautions?
Also can I goto the dealers with the number plate and they will tell me service history and any recall work it's had done?

Hi mate i can check these things for you if you pm me the reg ! 3 years ago the selling dealer pays for the run in service / well when you buy the car its in the price so they should carry it out. If its done less than 1200 miles all you need to do is get it done from a dealership but you will need to pay now! if its still got run in oil & not moved with 1200 miles or less it wont make a difference it just needs taken out along with diff oil ect. Most likley cost about Ł500 from a dealership..
I will be able to tell you the supplying dealer if its not a import then you can call them with the chasis number to confirm its been done if it dont some up on the bmw system..
The battery on these cars are under heavy pressure at the best of times might be worth buying a new battery & fitting it instead of jumping it.

I don't know, I have an a range I'm prepared to offer but that side of things and the circumstaces surrounding the car have to remain strictly private I'm afraid.

Its not the battery mate sometimes the cars dont like being jumped can cause sperradic faults that might need cleared.
Its a import btw i have pm'd you so bmw uk have no records on the car at all.

Personally i'd offer a cheeky Ł15k if it's been laid up for that long, there's no way i'd pay top money for it, you can get decent E60 M5's for Ł20K, why would you pay more than that for one that could have issues and has no test/tax etc..
Plus depends on circumstanes, why hasn't it been used? Enthusiast owned and kept in a heated garage and not used, or some dodgy character in Jail? All matters.

Might not be dodgy mate but its not had a enhancment done & its never been near a dealership here or abroad. It could have been sold put on a boat to where it is now then left..It would have zero miles on it then but will most likley have transport mode on ect maybe even transport blocks this will all need checking along with a run in service.
