Default Anyone used Kumho trackday tyres?

Been looking for 205/45/16 tyres and not a lot seems to be available trackday wise.

Ive noticed that kumho do this size, and at a good price too, and they sound like reasonably serious tyres just in terms of the fact that you can choose different compounds which normally hints that they are proper rubber.

Just wondered how people had got on with them though, and specifically how they compare to R888 and A048s which is what I normally use.

No point going for a cheaper option if its going to be rubbish, but thought I might give a pair of them a go initially as its not much cash to through away if they do turn out to be not much cop.

Mate of mine runs a tyre firm and swears by Kumhos on his track day Sylvia, dont know what sort he runs but I ran Ecsta and Ecsta 2 on my old focus and found them grippy and hard wearing.

read a thread on the rs2000 site about trackday tyres,
apprently the kumhos are alittle harder than the r888's so in theory you should get longer life.

Mar_K, the kumhos are available in various different compounds so it depends which compound one you are referring to and wether you are comparing to GG or SG on the 888's

Rich, interesting, hopefully Mike will see the thread and reply then, he's certainly someone who's opinion I would be interested in

Tried them on the Gooon when we had 16's on it and didn't like them at all, took too long to get heat into them and grip levels are poor when cold so changed the wheels and went back to 888's in the end

Should add it was the medium compounds

For track use, or road use ?

I tried a pair of 265/45x16 on the back of mine for a while. Due to the tread design, they were illegal within 1500 road miles, and very little hard usage.
Although oddly, they werent worn to the tread wear indicators yet. But they would fall foul of at least 1.6mm tread over 75% of the tyre width.

Narrower tyres may last longer in this respect. Seems bloody stupid though, as the outer tread is barely 2-3mm deep before its solid rubber. Fine for the track, crap for road legality.

Tyres work fine though.

Price is roughly half on some of the kuhmos, these are the 16" I just bought to give it a try:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Agreed on the A048, I currently have those and the R888 for my clio and both work very well.

My nova goes pretty easy on the front tyres, enough so that on RB5's I was struggling to get enough heat into them quick enough, so I think I would get away with them even in the dry for things like action days at combe for 10 mins at a time, but those arent the ones this thread is about, those are some that I have bought to use for damp conditions or even to cut to use as wet rears, sorry for confusion, was just showing how cheap they can be, the ones this thread is about are these ones:

http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.p...m12b0s690p9733

Which are 110 a corner, so a little cheaper than R888s basically.

Those are 15 so might be a bit of a tight squeeze onto a 16" wheel, would be like me trying to fit into your clothes

Chip,

We use Kumho tyres on many (including my own) cars and we find them excellent for the money...

The compounds all cross match to dunlop etc and the durability is I would say better than most....

Compounds for the kumho's

Thanks for that Ian.

What compounds do you tend to run for which conditions, and have you tried them on anything around the 1000kg mark and mid engined (long shot I know!)

The inters ive ordered are K20/K21, which it lists as:
Soft-wet for damp stages or for lightly loaded axles on dry surfaces

Which with a light front end on my car im hoping will mean I dont destroy them too quick if I try them in the dry?

The other ones I was looking at are K60 compound, but im worried I may not get enough heat into those on the front.

Kumhos seem to have come a long way in the last few years, I have them on my 2.0ltr fiesta and my Audi and they are very good.

Are you talking about road tyres, or track tyres?

TBH ive no interest in the road tyres, although I agree those have also come on a long way

We tend to use K21's or K50's all round on the 4WD dependant on the time of year and venue and combine K11's (front) and K21's (rear) on the MK 2's, thats mainly mixed (tar and concrete) surfaces as found on lots of the single venue's in the uk...

On your Nova i'd probably go for a K21 rear with a K11 front...

I suggested to Jez aka WOT (the owner of the Aubergine Escort that was recently in PF) to try these (V70s in hard compound), as I don't rate the R888s on a car in excess of 1350kg at ALL. Suffice to say he won the PF "Track Attack" event at Lyden Hill and also beat the Dorf . Now obviously the car and driver play an important part and his is reasonably well sorted, but I think he also liked the tyres and they contributed in no small way to him having the confidence to fling the car around and only finish a few seconds behind a proper race car Escort (which didn't count, as it was for road cars).

I personally haven't had a chance to try mine yet, as the car is still a few weeks away from being ready, but as Ian says for the money they are the tits (from all the research I did to find a suitable tyre that I will be using to replace the Dunlop SSRs that are no longer available).

Ps

One last question if anyone can help?

Do we know what the R888 GG compound relates too roughly in terms of the following scale:

K11 - (Equiv of Dunlop X22)
K21 - (Equiv of Dunlop X12)
K50 - (Equiv of Dunlop X08)
K60 - (Equiv of Dunlop X04)
K90 - (Equiv of Dunlop X02 and Harder)

Ive noticed from reading on rally forums that they reckon the Kumho's are slightly more durable than the equiv dunlop in all cases, so potentially you can get away with running a little softer, so that seems to tie in well with what Ian is saying.

As you say it all depends on car weights, we were running about 800kg FWD, with about 230bhp, we relly liked 888s
I must admit it was about 5 years ago we tried Kumhos, they may have come on a long way since then

Yes, the V70s in 245/35 x 18s only seem to be available in K60 or K90 .

Hence why I worded my comments carefully, as on Martin's Raudi, the R888s were fine, but on my own car, three laps and the car is all over the place (fine on the road, but not on the track IMO).

Even on my clio if I stay out on track for a long time in one go the 888s definately start to go off, even with only about 1000kg (inc people) to hold back, so it doesnt surprise me that they do so in a heavier car in less time.
