Default Power Steering Racks, how to tell if buggered?

my car seems to have a bit of a dodgy feel to the steering at the mo, i jacked up the passenger side and with the steering lock on (drivers wheel still on floor) i can feel a couple of mm play in the rod, if you hold the wheel at 9 and 3 oclock position you can move it left/right a bit.

now i just had a thought that maybe cos is p/s the engine needs to be on???

and do both wheels need to be in the air??

and should i put on full lock to each side im checking??

cheers for any help

Is the system losing fluid?

if so is it leaking into the bellows of the rack?

Other than that, there is some free movement in the rack, but not too much!

Take a steering arm off and move it around feeling for tightness/looseness and also any play.

not loosing fluid as far as i can tell, but with pass wheel in the air and with the steering lock on you can move the wheel in and out a little, so if its like that while driving it will make it feel funny...

wont it?

The steering lock will let the wheel move a bit anyway mate - you need another person to just rock the steering wheel, just a small bit, so the wheels don't hardly move. You can then hear and feel any movement in the joints. Do this with weight on the wheels (pit or ramps if you can't get underneath)
