Default buying a td mondeo mk2 what to look for please?

i'm looking at td mondeo's as my petrol and the milage i do is just becoming un-economical, i'v seen a fairly local nice car but it's slightly high milage ie 260k is this too much for a well looked after diesel, i'm looking on the cheap as atm i just don't have the funds for something decent so anything under the £500 mark would be ideal.

he say's it smokes for the first few seconds upon start up, as i have no clue with diesels any info on buying tips for them would be grately appreciated, thanks in advance.

P.s i think if it's still a good motor i might just stick another engine in it or is it gunna be a pig working on it like most mondeo's are

As above, if its cheap enough and has some tax and test just buy it and run it until it gives up.

the only trouble is i don't want it too break whilst in the middle of the m40 , but i get what your saying but theres nothing wrong in looking for a bargain, as my current mondeo only cost me 250 and i'v covered over 20k in that and it still takes a beating when i get bored.

but thanks for the advice lads as yes for something that cheap i could prob's break some of it and still make my money back

If it's been serviced etc mate same as any other car it should be fine. I bought an M reg one for £70 a few years ago mind and it hadn't been serviced for about 70k until I got it and it ran for about 40k+ over 3 years between me and my mate who bought it off me!

It's pretty high mileage for £500 really, their pence in the auctions.why not pop over to Leominster car auctions?not miles from you and Christ there's some cheap cars there.mondeo Td is a great choice though as their economical and not too slow either check the belts been done with the tensioners recently though as they can go and then the engines scrap.

thats far too much mileage for a mondy turd - reckon it will die shortly - ideall you need a good engine and pump with what you planning

i can get mk3's all day long for 700-1000 around the 54plate mark but they are high milage ex taxis, all owned by a pal of mine who rents them out,

problem with mk3 is the turbo and pumps and injectors, you dont want to buy a mk3 then have to replace one of them the mk2's were a lot less problmactic

Smoke on startup could be a leaky injector leaking diesel into the cylinder when its not running. Would avoid that one as could go tits up!

I'd be looking for one with a few less miles than that really, sayes that we used to have a mk2 mondeo estate taxi with 420'000 miles on the clock they only changed it for a mk4 the beginning of this year.

Going back to what your looking for i only sold my sisters mk2 with 150'000 on it for £280 with t and t was due for belts but still had life left in it. so i'm sure you could find one well under your price limit with less than 200'000 miles

It's not such a big deal on the TD, as they're not 'Common Rail' like the TDCi, so the injectors are cheap.

Cheer's for all the advice guys it's appreciated, and well even though it was tidy the car I was looking at he wanted 550 for it so he can go fuck himself really with that milage, still on the lookout for one but gunna keep the miles below the 150k mark as I want some use out of it, of and a belt change won't worry me as it'll be the first thing I do myself.

And ran i'v kept all your info in my head , and will be putting it too use when I get this td

Ps don't want a mk3 as not a big fan on the shape and with injectors pump and dmf I'd rather not buy one cheap with the worry it'll cost me a packet to fix
