Default Those 'mega fuel saver' thingies...

I was looking for something on ebay the other day and got pissed off with a whole page of these things, so after a quick squint at the listing I sent him an email...

Dear fuel-saver99,

How does fitting a magnet to the oil filter remove particles from the fuel?

- dan_rs500

Got a reply today:

Dear dan_rs500,

hi,

magnet at oil filter will snap the micro particles and prevent it go back into engine.
engine oil will be cleaner than before .

install at fuel line will give you fuel saving
The molecules on the inside of your tank clusters can't be exposed to the oxygen necessary for combustion. The result is incomplete fuel burn with the unburned molecules emitted as pollution or remaining inside the engine as damaging carbon/varnish deposits. The Mega Fuel Saver fits easily over the inbound fuel line (straps included, no special tools required ). It delivers an abrupt designed magnetic field to break up these fuel clusters, exposing all molecules to the oxygen,

ensuring the best fuel burn possible!

- fuel-saver99

Now I could have totally picked his reply apart but I kept it pretty simple:

Dear fuel-saver99,

Fair enough, the magnet on the oil filter is a valid device. Although your advert is not clear about what it is you are selling. As for the fuel line magnet... I still dont really understand how this device works. What do you mean by 'tank clusters'? Does this refer to the fuel tank? If so, what molecules are there in a fuel tank that can't be exposed to oxygen? When the fuel is put in the fuel tank the filler neck opening is fully exposed to the open air, which as I'm sure you know contains oxygen. At this point in the fuel system I can only think of rust deposits being what you are refering to. If this is the case then surely this rust would have been exposed to oxygen in the first place for it to pass from sound metal to rust. You then go on to explain that the result is 'incomplete fuel burn which then causes carbon deposits or varnishing'. Surely this is most likely as a result of an over rich fuel mixture? At which point I fail to see how your device leans off the fuel mixture unless it actually crimps the fuel hose there by creating a restriction in fuel flow. As a result the fuel/air mixture is leaned off. Or perhaps the super duper magnet collects all the bits of rust in the fuel line and creates a blockage in the fuel line which would have a similar effect as the previous method. Oil based carbon deposits on the other hand are more than likely a cause of oil leaking past piston rings and/or valve stem oil seals. In which case installing a magnet on a fuel line will not cure this. No matter how many you fit or how hard you try, magnetism can not cure a worn piston ring.

This product might be something I would like to offer to my customers. This means I may place an order quantity of 1000 or more at a time. I just need a better description of what it is and a better explanation of how it works.

I await your reply.

Thanks

Dan

sounds to me like one of these stupid little peices of crap they sell at market stalls, giving you some nonsense about how it will do wonders. I got offered a magnet that ftted to the exhaust manifold that would somehow give you up to 20 more bhp .

It was sold by this polish chap at ingoldmills market, think he's left now, havn't seen him in ages.

Yeah his reply should be interesting, hehe. The thing that protects these guy's is the 'guilty untill proven inocent' clause. Untill some one has solid proof that their item does not work they can still sell them. It's a bit hard to prove it does not break a molicule down so it can be burnt. Hmm, the next ebay scam: exhaust molecule catcher!

Maybe 10 strong magnets on the front of your car, when on the motorway you can get behind a truck and doiiiiiiing you can turn of your engine and safe loads of fuel, the only problem i see there is if you cannot turn them off you could end up 100 miles from where you want to be

Luckily the libel laws have changed, but a good few years ago I wrote a piece on a certain well known device that promised an eco improvement that was quite tec. I stated that it was a 'controlled air leak' which is exactly what it is. The company then sued my Publisher and I had to print a retraction even though what I wrote was 100% true.

Those Eco improving Tec things should be added to my list of above totally useless devices. Can't quite recall what they are called though. Load of tosh really isn't it

FSE Power Boost Valves and Ecotek valves. Same thing IIRC. Both do diddly squat.

Hang on now, you mean to say that when you provided your readers with information, founded from facts and figures etc pointing out what a product actually does the law was against you? This is yet another down falling of this country. Surely a person buys a magazine on their chosen subject to read information? Is this not what sets good publications apart from not so good ones? (post heavily editted after my brain decided to remind me it is on the subject libel)
