Default Help please!!!! Wrong Fuel!!! Petrol in Diesel tank.

Could do with a little advise guys. To cut a long story short :-

  • I've a full tank of V Power in our Mk5 Golf TDi.
  • The engine has not been started.
  • The car has been recovered home.

Whats the best way to drain the tank?

I'm in the Edinburgh area if anyone is local and has recommendations of someone that can carry out the work at the house.

Cheers

undo the fuel pipe to the tank and drain it presumably.
i once accidently put 30quid of petrol in the 307 so just filled it to the brim with diesel and started it. it ran fine.
that was at about 50k miles and its now on 130k so it cant have done much harm.

as stated above ur lucky really as you wont have to contend with gettin it out of the injection pump and rebleeding the system wich can be a right pain in the arse

sometimes a small amount of petrol in a diesel is good with cleaning injecters but this is debateable

People are getting confused, petrol in a diesel car will not make it run better, diesel in petrol can potentially clean the system. Drain the tank completely if it hasn't been driven and you should be ok.

Cheers for the replys. Could the fuel be drawn up out of the tank with a fuel pump attached to a length of hose? or will the car likely have a filter in place to prevent siphoning?

i once thought that the £20 worth of high octane my gaffer put in my moms trooper would run my car because his ran ok with it but no i had to leave it running for days with the key in the ignition and then the plug died before it ran out

right get a long flexi tube (water tight) insert one end in to the fule tank as far in as yoy can then suck on it untill you get a mouth full of petroll and point the end of the pipe in a basin ect below the lowest point in your fule tank, the end of the pipe MUST be lower than the bottem of your tank, yoy may allso have to suck o the pipe a few times to get it started, then simpally dillute with a full tank of deisil whats left in the fule tank and your ready to go

You could do that or remove a hose from the tank to drain it. Is there a hatch under the rear seats for the pump? Could do it that way aswell.

James most of my tools are in Glasgow, so its either a case of making it as simple as possible & using the car jack and a limited selection of toold or paying someone to do it.

I was wondering, if you took a pipe off, after the fuel pump, then clicked the ignition to number 2, so the pump kicks in, wouldn't it just pump the tank dry using the fuel pump?

or would this be a massively stupid idea?

this should work but then it may cut out when it gets a bit of an airlock may well start straight back up afterwards mind but removing the pipe from the tank may well be the longest easiest option sound like th op has it sorted now anyway

stick it in the evo lol

zetec-sam, thing is mate, it will mos likely fuck the fuel pump.

i think what andy was getting at, was to use a different pump with a tube going down the fuel filler to syphon it out.

Wont harm the engine if there is a small amount of petrol in the diesel, so you dont need to be mega mega thorough about it anyway luckily.
Obviously empty it as best you can, but you dont need to be paranoid about it.

iv had to do this for a mate and all i did was undo the pipe going onto the filter and put a pump on it and let it pull all the petrol out then i put £5 of good fuel in the tank and turnd the pump on again so the last bit was all most %100 clean then put £10 in and sent him strate to fill it to the brim and it was spot on and it was all done in the time it tuck to make a cup of tea job done

As said you have done right in that you haven't started it, so the fuel lines etc won't be contaminated so simply drain the tank and refill with the correct fuel, I am surprised that the filler neck didn't prevent this from happening, certainly the new Fords make it impossible to fill with the wrong fuel. Removing the fuel line will not keep the pump going, it will just prime as usual, should think Diesels are the same, in any case I would not recommend this way.

I wouldn't risk a single drop of it through a common rail diesel with a high pressure fuel pump personally. The cost of a replacement 'if' something goes wrong as a result of the missfuel far outweighs the cost of having the tank thoroughly drained.

I agree. The diesel fuel lubricates the pump, whereas the petrol acts as a degreaser, so will fuck it in no time.

Don't even turn the ignition on, remove the fuel pump, insert a bit of hose pipe and syphon every last drop out.

A litre of petrol or paraffin to a full tank of diesel will stop the diesel crystallising in very cold weather, like they had in Scotland the other week.
Half a gallon of petrol to a full tank of diesel is a good one just as you are taking your car for an MOT.

Lift back seat up and take the sender out the top of the tank if all else fails and drain it that way.
