Was awful!
I used to have to dig my elbow in the drivers side door card when I drove your old M3 on track or I ended up splattered up the window, not ideal

i'd like to have some more supportive cloth seats, but guessing there aren't any suitable replacements unless you go aftermarket?
At least with 4 doors you can buy some decent aftermarket front seats and not have to worry about them tipping to let people in the back!

what are m3's like for the ring and track work as standard ? I just had a look around and with new prices, by the time your looking at coilovers, ARB's, better seats, big brake conversion your knocking on the £10k door before even tuning the engine.

How about some half leather sports seats. i used to have them in my old coupe and they were quite good - must be loads in the breakers from late 318i mtec saloons? mine were originally poverty spec brown colour including the dash, so swapped it all over including a black dash and carpet. Was a piss easy to do to and cost about £250 i think from the big bmw breakers down past maidstone off the M20.

Jim did 8:38 IIRC in his old one which had only minor mods and was about 4.5-5K worth in todays market at most.

They are fantastic cars out the box, if you cant get a totally standard one round the ring in under 9 minutes then its not the car thats the problem its your driving!

Longitudinally stiffer means front to back. If you pushed straight down on the middle of the car, it would flex less than the other one.

Stiffer in torsion means that its stiffer when its twisted. when you take a corner fast, the car wants to twist. Its almost as if the front of the car is turning clockwise or counter-clockwise (looking straight at the front of the car) and the rear of the car is going the opposite way. thats torsional movement.

Coupe is allegedly 70lb heavier due to chassis reinforcement.

Having driven a few of both types I would have to say that you need to be a fucking epically good driver to notice that sort of tiny difference, cause I can pedal fairly well and I'm fucked if I could tell!

They are exactly the same as the original M3 Saloon seats but less slippy, add a black carpet and dash and bobs your uncle!

i emailed a trader, bmautosport and he's got a refurbed set of concours IIs he wants 600quid for.

i asked him if mine were worth anything to him and he's offered me 400quid in PX wheels+tyres if i come to him.

im guessing the 400quid mark is a tad low even from a trader?

Yes and very surprisingly the touring is said to be the stiffest of all, there are a few guys in Germany and norway that swear by them for track and drift work.... i also think they look better but thats just personal opinion. Shame they never came with the m3 lump.

Jim i take it your back on here because the bmw forums are mostly filled with total fools?

don't think you need to spend a fortune to get an m3 to do decent track work. mine has lower x brace(£40 from scrappers) front upper strut brace(£30 off ebay) braided hoses, ebc discs and yellowstuff pads all round. eibach springs and bilstein yellow dampers. the only other things i would like to add are eibach anti roll bars and the innards of an e46 m3 diff( higher geared) as the standard evo diff is way too tall for road and track use. 3rd is good for 100mph,4th runs to 141mph and you still have 5th and 6th to go!

is the evo higher geared than the 3.0?

this car feels quite slow to me, but i think that might be wher the gearing is longer than the mr2 and lack of turbo.

i remember my old one feeling like it had a very long first gear, but 1st in this car just doesnt seem to "feel" fast

evo's are limited in first gear jim. don't think anyone has found a way round it yet either. evo diff is physically bigger than the 3.0 one and a different ratio.

not sure exactly how. throttle bodies are cable operated so can't be them. there is a pressure switch in the hydraulic clutch flexi pipe but i replaced mine with a braided one and it is still limited. they just feel a bit flat until 5k rpm if that makes sense. they don't have traction control or anything so it is something in the mapping, but as far as i know nobody has got round it.

still silly geared for a supposed sports car though. the e46 m3 diff raises the revs by 500rpm for the same speed. the diff itself doesn't fit the e36 but all the internals from the e46 diff fit in the e36 casing

well healthcheck is complete...

not exactly great news

Hi Jim,

We have checked your car over and have found the following;

The aircon requires a new compressor, belt and a regas, hopefully there are no leaks in the system, but this we wont know until we regas it. £927.60

The handbrake, the internal face of the discs are in a bad state and require new ones. This means it will also need new shoes and pads. £435

The PAS is leaking from both hoses. £169.58

The car is producing 300bhp at the flywheel, sounds a little low but really is not bad for a car of this age or mileage.

The throttle cable needs removing and routing correctly. £35

Play in both front tie rods, these need changing and the alignment needs doing. £440

Oil leak from the vanos unit, it would be wise to remove the vanos unit and reseal it. £425

The propshaft coupling is splitting and requires replacing. £244

Diff input seal is leaking. £240

The drivers window needs a new rubber and possible regulator, if the motor still drops after this then a new motor is required. £265, motor extra if needed.

All prices are inclusive of parts, labour and VAT.
