Default focus1.8 zetec problem

can any one help?
has anyone come across this problem before? its a 51 reg car and the speedo needle drops to zero for a while, when it first started it only did it now and again but now it happens quite a lot, i do notice a differance at the throttle pedal and it might cut out when stopping at lights etc. I suppose it must be a sensor or something, any help would welcome. cheers steve
